We are in the process of.... Finding a new addition for our little pack. My biggest question at this point is. If a pup is shipped to you, there are two ways for them to fly. One is in cabin and handed over to you at the airport by the person attending them. The other is a pressurized cabin, usually located under the nose of the plane (sounds terrifing to me). How do you recieve your pup at the airport? I would love to hear from others that have flown their new babys home. What was your experience, how did the young pup handle the flight. My other thought is if I were to fly to the closest airport to the breeder, recieve the pup there,go back through security and fly home with our new baby in cabin with us. What can I expect? What would I need to do in the way of a carrier, ticket, etc for the new pup? Help please? |
I flew from Baltimore to Michigan to pick up Mia. Lori met me at the airport, and took me back to her house to sign the papers. It's great because you can see the parents and check out the environment. She then dropped me back off at the airport. I brought along an empty travel bag for Mia. I had to buy her a dog ticket ($75. one way on Southwest). She rode with me in cabin. I have heard of the breeder meeting people at the airport too. Most airports have doggie potty areas, so look up where that is located in case you have a layover between your flights. Best wishes to you on finding the new, perfect addition to your sweet family. |
Galen came by courier. He was in the plane with someone that made sure he was ok. She gave him water, food, and if he had to potty. She was wonderful. Please do not have any pup put in the cargo area. It is not safe for them there. |
Thank you for your response. It sounds like it was a ton of fun! |
Verbena, putting a baby in the cargo area scares me as well. Because of the distance,I have started looking in TX as well. |

The absolute best way to transport a pup - and the most fun - would be to fly to the nearest airport and meet the breeder in person, spend a bit of time with him/her and the pup at the airport and then fly home with the new addition in the cabin with you. If this isn't possible, then have the pup flown with a courier. I know its done all the time, but I just can't abide by transporting unless a human is within touching/comforting distance. |
So glad I found this post. I have a question for those who flew to pick up their pup from the breeder. I'm in the process of purchasing a ticket and one of my main concerns is the amount of time I should leave from my arrival to my departure. For example right now I am looking at a flight that gets into Kansas City at 12:05pm and Departs at 2:05pm. I want to make sure I have enough time after meeting with my breeder to purchase his ticket, make it through security and get to my gate. |
I have solved my transport problem!! As for only a 2hr layover,I personally can talk baby dogs for way more than 2hrs. Remember pup may need to potty before boarding. Im thinking more like 3 hrs. |

Im gonna go get her. We will be out of town, reasonably in the area and then it will be a slow trip home in the RV for 4 or so days. Part of this trip is one that has been planned for a year and the hunt for a new baby has in the works for several months and it all just seemed to come together today. |
