RE: thin coat-big improvement Hi everyone, I took Remi to the vet. and to the groomer. I was so worried she was losing her hair-and actually she has ALOT of new hair coming in...I started Remi on "solid Gold" seameal about 3 weeks ago and it really seems to be working, she is 4 1/2 months old and her puppy coat is about 5-6" long- but she also has new hair growth coming in big time -the new hair is about 1" and seems to be coming in nice & thick...:) yeah... also to anyone who has a yorkie with a sparse hair- I copied this from a well known yorkie website concerning coat....Reading this again made me feel better :) ****A puppy whose coat appears sparse of thin will, as an adult, have a thick, long coat of the correct fine silky, glossy texture. This coat's growth is like a human's hair, in that it is born with very little but by adulthood has an abundance of hair, the quantity having doubled and redoubled all during puppy-hood (or childhood). Glad to hear because my 6 month old has thin hair and slow growing compared to siblings, but his rarely matts and I knew silky so glad it will just take time |
Time/maturation is definately a factor as well. I was very worried about Liberty's puppy coat. It seemed thin, not pretty, and almost not the healthiest looking. We'd jealously look at the cotton coats and have "hair envy". haha. Well, Liberty's 2 1/2 now and has a beautiful silky coat to the floor. Actually, it was just yesterday that I gave it a trim to keep it from acting like a dust mop! Think he's also acquired that sassy walk that Yorkies are famous for. Luv that attitude!!! To pup mums, I'd say be patient, as giving it a bit of time can also help. |
yakkwak Hi yes- you used the exact term I was looking for "hair envy" I have never had a parti yorkie before and just didn't know what to expect from the coat, my 1st. yorkie had a very thick coat from puppy to adult, so this thin- sparse hair on my parti was just a little upsetting to me- and she is one of 4 sisters and all of them have a very full coat...From all the post I have read I have high hopes that she will eventually have that beautiful to full coat she has very silky hair, which does not tangle-now I just need to be patient and let that adult coat develop ....:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |

Barneys Mom I should clarify Remi's hair is very thin on her legs and chest also & with her being a parti yorkie, those areas the legs & chest are white & I think that contributes to the hair looking so thin also...but on her back where the black is her hair is growing like crazy...lets hope it spreads to the legs & chest, does anyone know- do the chest and legs take longer for the coat & fullness to develop in those areas?? just wondering if anyone knew. thanks Remi's Mom:aimeeyork |
Barneysmomny - It seems like it started to show a positive turn after 14-16 month maybe. To me, the thinness seemed more distinct in the blue saddle area ( as opposed to the gold part) because of the contrast to the paleness of the skin. Liberty also had the tiny white patch at the chest which disappeared with time. Don't know if that's a fable but had a breeder once say it was sometimes an indicator in a puppy of a future silky coat. |

Hi I am new here and so glad I found this site.There is so much great information and advice!My question is this: I have noticed that my 13 week old yorkie baby's hair on the top of his head is very thin. Did any of you have that with your yorkie and will the hair on top of his head grow thicker as he gets older? I was just wondering.He is as cute as a button but just thought I would ask:animal36 |
NJYorkieKC- Hi welcome, I know with my yorkie her hair on her head at about 14-16 weeks old-started to turn silver at the roots, which made her look almost bald, when parting the hair I could see the color changing & it will definitely give the appearance of thin hair, as the color starts to change it will look better and I also think the hair on top can seem a little thinner when they are young, and as the coat grows and the adult coat comes in the coat overall starts to look better & thicker. |

Breaking Hair Color on Head Your discussion sounds so familiar! When Taffy was a 16 week old puppy, my friend, who was also his breeder, explained to me that the 'white hair' growing at the roots of Taffy's black hair on his head was perfectly normal. She told me that this white hair was called "breaking", and she said happily that Taff was probably taking after his mother in coloring. Taff's brother (Whose new owners picked him because he was smaller) had not shown signs of "breaking"; she said his tiny brother would probably stay the black & gold color of their sire. Well, my 'black & gold puppy' is now deep to light silver on his body and his head, chest, and legs are all shades of blonde. It has been fun to watch Taff's color changing! |
