[News] Senior Pays $10k Ransom for Yorkie 1 Attachment(s) Wow! That is sad that someone would take advantage of a senior citizen like that! The only good thing is he got him back. I do wonder how he got lost, did the man just let him out to play in the yard? Be careful out there! --- A little Yorkshire terrier is back safe and sound with his owner in the Valley Springs area after kidnappers received $10,000 for the canine's freedom. Ten-year-old Sandy was taken sometime July 20, according to information from the Sheriff's Department. The dog serves as a companion for Frank Compton, 80, whose wife died about four years ago. Compton said he and Sandy had gone for their usual evening walk, after which Compton fixed dinner. About 9 or 10 p.m. "I noticed that he was missing," Compton said. He searched the neighborhood in vain, finally giving up as it grew late. "So finally I went back and had a sleepless night," Compton said. About 2 p.m. the next day, Compton got a call from someone saying they had his dog and wanted $10,000 in exchange for Sandy's freedom. Compton told the man he only had a couple of thousand dollars in his checking account, but he said that wasn't enough. They wanted $10,000, and if Compton got authorities involved in the matter, the dog would die. "I didn't know just what to do," Compton said. Saying he's not a wealthy man, Compton said he first thought he just wouldn't pay the ransom, but then realized the dog meant too much to him. "I couldn't let him die," Compton said. He was told to drop the money off at the Mokelumne River fish hatchery near Clements. When he got there in the early evening, two men in a white sedan began following him, and one got out of the car and approached him with a knife at the facility's locked gate, telling Compton his dog was farther up the road. When Compton said he wanted to see Sandy and got out of the car, the man grabbed the money from his hand and jumped back into the sedan, which sped off before Compton could get the license number. "I searched and searched for about two or three hours," Compton said, but he was unable to find Sandy. That night at home he heard a car door slam "and about a minute or two later I saw Sandy running out there in the backyard," Compton said. Compton said he knows who may be behind the incident, and said revenge might also be a motive, but he doesn't have any proof. Sheriff's Detective Chris Villegas said Monday he had just received the report and is checking into some leads, but added it was too early at this point to determine just who or what was behind the dognapping. http://www.calaverasenterprise.com/a...ews/news02.txt |
Dognapping is the thing that worries us the most with Higgins. He is just too little and too cute and too tempting...... How cruel! I hope they get them and throw the book at 'em! About the value of your dog(s): Keep careful documentation (cancelled check, for instance, or a breeder's contract) of what you paid for your dog. Also keep records of veterinarian expenses, etc. We had our two purebred English Setters stolen out of our LOCKED kennel in the country while we were shopping one day. FORTUNATELY, they were tattooed with my social security number. We notified our Connecticut State Police, but they said that they only investigated "felony" thefts of items valued at over $2,000. Our dogs qualified since they were show dogs. They got very interested when we reported that other purebred dog owners had been made aware of two theft rings stealing dogs for fighting dogs and dogs to be sold to labs, as well as dogs for whom forged AKC papers could be made, particularly hunting dogs. Shortly afterward, the thiefs unknowingly stole a NY State Trooper's trained K-9 police dog. Then ALL the cops in the Northeast got interested, and eventually, both dogknapping rings were arrested. Our dogs? They were found with two other tattooed purebreds, DRUGGED, in a town dump about 20 miles from us a few days later. It was too risky to deal with tattooed dogs, so that is why they were put out. The man in charge of the dump had a rifle raised to shoot them when a citizen happened into the dump and stopped him, saying the dogs looked "too good" to just be dumped there and called the local dog warden. SCARY! But we were fortunate to be able to prove the value of the dogs or the police would NOT have cared one whit about investigating any of it. |
Wow, that's crazy. Were they fine afterwards Higgin's Mom? That's pretty unique you tattooed them with your SSN. You gotta be careful about your SSN, less someone try to steal your identity! Especially on YorkieTalk! :P |
The dogs were thrilled to see us and recovered from their grogginess within a day. This was back in the early 80s, before microchips, and tattooing was the way to go. My social security number was then registered with the National Dog Registry for a one-time fee of $35 and that is how we were reunited with our dogs.....it worked! :D |
New picture. An awfully big Yorkie there... :P |
what's really sad, is the dog doesn't even look like a yorkie... |
