Are AKC papers important? I'm getting Boomer soon, maybe even this coming weekend if he reaches two pounds at his vet check. I was wondering if he is AKC, but she sells on limited, do you get the papers with that? I'm getting a few year health guarantee and stuff like that, so do I need these papers? Will I need them if I try to do obedience or anything like that? Just wondering. I don't care, cause I am getting him with or without. But will they be important? |
From the AKC site: Limited Registration means that the dog is registered but no litters produced by that dog are eligible for registration. Chapter 3, Section 4A of the AKC's Rules Applying to Registration and Discipline states the following: "Limited Registration may be requested for a dog when application for individual registration of the dog is submitted, provided the application, together with a request for such limitation, is filed by the owner(s) of the litter at birth. No offspring of a dog for which Limited Registration has been granted is eligible for registration. Each registration certificate for such dog shall carry notice of the limitation, and the limitation shall continue, regardless of any change of ownership, unless and until the owner(s) of the litter at birth shall apply to AKC for removal of the limitation." A dog registered with an AKC Limited Registration shall be ineligible to be entered in a breed competition in a licensed or member dog show. It is eligible, however, to be entered in any other licensed or member event. These events include: Obedience, Tracking, Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, Agility and Earthdog. Limited Registration is determined by the litter owner(s). The litter owner(s) check the Limited box on the AKC Dog Registration Application. Limited Registration certificates are white with an orange border; the Full Registration certificate is white with a purple border. Limited Registration can be changed to Full Registration only by the litter owner(s). The litter owner(s) will need to obtain the Application to Revoke Limited Status. That form will then need to be completed and sent to our Raleigh address with the processing fee. After processing, we will send a Full Registration certificate to the dog's owner. Limited Registration helps breeders protect their breeding programs. If breeders do not want puppies used for breeding purposes, they can request the Limited Registration option for those puppies. |
Limited just means you're not allowed to use him to breed; the AKC won't give papers for any puppies he fathers, but they'll register him. |
I'm going to have him neutered as soon as he is old and big enough. I just thought I might need them for ownership reasons? Also, doesn't that mean he is pure yorkie? I really don't care, he is going home with me no matter. Thanks all. |
You get the limited papers just to show his pedigree. Just can't bred him or get papers if you try. Just proves you are getting what you pay for basically. |
Do you need to have the AKC papers for agility or anything like that? (Already neutered male) |

He could still possibly lift his leg/have strange fascinations for inanimate objects ;)(humping) after you have him fixed. I don't think there's anything you could do about the leg lifting(if he does it), but with the humping you would just correct it like any other undesirable behavior |
Well well well. My Lenox, is from the same breeder you got Boomer from. We LOVE her. He came with limited as well and totally akc quality. You will love him. Lenox, has an absolute adorable personality. I bet Boomer will too. Karen takes great care of her dogs and is a very nice person. She's like family to us. Good luck getting him. Best, Tanya |
Absolutely get his AKC registration. You paid for it by purchasing a quality dog so get the documents. Also, you never know what may happen. It would be easier to place him if that was ever necessary. There are situations that his papers could be required. AKC can use the registration fee. It sounds like you found a good breeder and a great addition to your family. Enjoy the new guy! |
Jasper came with AKC registration. I still haven't switched it over (if that is the proper phrase) to me yet. I bought him as a pet. But I felt having him AKC registered helped to make sure that he came from a healthier lineage. However, since joining YT I have learned that doesn't necessily mean anything. Should I go ahead and get the AKC registered? I didn't feel like it was necessary. But now I'm wondering if I should.... Geez I get so confused sometimes.:( |
