What should i have done??? What would u do??? I stopped this morning to pick up food for the pups. The one place that sells Canine Caviar and Fromm also does grooming, boarding, and daycare. A guy came in to pick up his dog who had been there several days being boarded. His only reaction when she came out was "hey dog". I was behind him and she came to me without a second (or first even) look his way. Not once did he pat her or act like he was happy to see her, and she really didn't look happy to see him. He had to pull her out the door to leave. Once they left I remarked to the girl about the lack of happiness both had shown and she said that during the pup's stay there had been several times that her behavior had indicated possible abuse. No proof, just suspicion. I'm thinking I might go back and ask them to call the owner and tell them somebody may be interested in buying her, and see what the owner says. I can't get her little face out of my mind! What would you do? |
That is so sad. I think if I could afford to take in another dog I would do exactly what you thought of. See if the owner would sell. That poor baby went straight to you....that would have broken my heart :( |
If the guy says yes. Would you buy and keep her? It's sad to see things like that and not be able to help right away... I hope you find a solution to this. |
Are you sure the guy who picked her up was the dog's owner? Could it be he just picked up the dog for a friend, neighbor, or family member? Maybe someone in the hospital, etc., as we had to do with family member dogs when a house fire occurred. It's sad to think there might be abuse, and I hope that's not the case, but I have picked up dogs for others when their flights are delayed, etc. and their boarder will close before they can get their fur baby, who will then have to spend the entire weekend being boarded and not at home. Some react ecstatic to see me, but others just want out of there! :D Just wondering... It certainly couldn't hurt to try to acquire the dog, if you want to care for it yourself. |
There are Animal Control agencies in every county with staff to do a drive by or a house call on those suspected of abusing animals. It is the responsibility of the boarding business to report him if they genuinely believe he is abusing the dog. I suspect the guy is just a grouch and the dog knows it. Most animal abusers do not pay to board their dogs. They leave the dog in the back yard, garage or locked bathroom with a pee pad, bowl of water and food. All this is speculation. You should call the business and tell them it is their responsibility to report their concerns and suspicions to Animal Control in your county (or parish if you live in Louisiana). The guy will never know who reported him. Most Animal Control staff will do a drive by, look in the yard and get a feel for the situation before confronting the person. They will know immediately if the dog is abused and have the power to remove the animal immediately. |

Hm I don’t know, the dog could even be his wife’s dog.. Maybe he doesn't like the dog.. DH didn't like Peanut when I first brought him home.. took him about 3 weeks but still. I think it’s hard to say if you don’t know the whole story. Sometimes I go to pick up Peanut and he cowards down, and acts like I’m going to kick him or something. Peanut has never been abused. If someone were to witness that, would they think he was abused?? Probably. I also think it could be very insulting for the owner of the dog if someone were to call him and ask if they can buy his dog.. You would have to explain how you were able to get his number and why you would want to buy his dog. Also I don’t think the salon can even give you his number.. I’m pretty sure that is against the law..?? If the owner or staff think the dog is being abused then they need to handle it. Maybe just tell the staff “if” it ever gets to that point give them your number and tell them you would be interested. |
I would leave it up to the boarding staff but they will probably do nothing. Maybe have them call him for you and tell him that you fell in love with his dog. I know how you feel. I needed duct tape to cover my mouth at the vets office this morning when a lady brought in a Lab that was fatter than fat. I know it was the fattest dog I've ever seen. Poor Baby!! |
After thinking about it all day I did start to wonder if the dog was even his. I was even considering the possibility that he was stealing the dog! Maybe I should just wait until the end of the week when I go back for more food. I could just ask if the pup has been back. I certainly didn't witness any abuse firsthand. The poor little girl just didn't look happy at all.:( |
Now that you mention it, I don't know if my dogs would be all that happy either if I boarded them. They just might come out all mad at me for leaving them and give me the cold shoulder and stink eye. Ya never know. My Karlee even cowers sometimes, and you'd think I'd been beating her. Not so; I don't even raise my voice to her because she is so sensitive. If only dogs could talk, it would be nice to know what is on their minds. |
The dog may have been mad at him for boarding her and was giving the cold shoulder. Did it look fearful and abused to. Generally someone who abuses their dog wouldn't board them they'd leave them out in the yard starving |
