spaying question
 
My yorkie Maddie is not spayed. She will be 1 year on January 20. I had a hard time trying to decide if I wanted to do it or not. I have decided that the best thing for her is to get her spayed. She is a little aggressive towards my son and his friends and I was wondering is spaying changes their personality any. I have heard that neutering males sometimes calms them, and was just wondering if it might be the same for females.

I had Raven spayed at around 5 months. My vet wanted to wait until she weighed at least 2 lbs. I never noticed any difference in her personality, she is still very playful. Raven is now a little over a year old, and the only thing spaying did for her was make her chunk up a little bit. (Which I'm happy with)
The vet did tell me to expect this. I will be getting my new baby in early Feb,
and plan to have him neutered as soon as possible. I'm hoping this prevents
him from hiking. I have been told that if you don't plan on breeding it's healthier for them to be fixed.

Spaying is a personal choice but there are alot of health benefits to getting it done. I didnt notice any personality difference in my girl after the spay.

All of my pets are neutered and spayed. And, I'm sure they are all happier and will live longer because of it.

I would do it for the health benefits alone - if for no other reason. (Plus, of course, we won't be having baby kittens and puppies).

Regardless of what you decide about spaying, Joan, the best thing for you to do is to consult a dog trainer about your pup's aggression. This isn't something you want to ignore! A good, positive trainer will teach YOU how to work with your pup and it shouldn't take very many sessions. It will be well worth your time and effort!

In the meantime, I would make your son and his friends "little treat dispensing machines". Have them walk by and drop treats by Maddie for no reason (they can start out tossing them if she won't let them get closer at first). Let your son be the source of good things. Let him feed her and let him be the one to introduce new toys.

But, do consult a trainer!

We had Bitsy spayed about four months ago and she "chunked up" a bit too. I have noticed that she just acts like she feels better in general...she seems to have more energy but that's good cause she used to do nothing but lay around so we are happy that she acts like she feels good..also..she has started doing this talking thing when she wants to be petted or held..don't know how to explain it but it's soooooo cute. I just think she feels better since she was spayed and definitly enjoys her food more, LOL :) She's not as finicky!

thanks all. I am definintely getting her spayed for the health reasons, I just thought that maybe I could have an extra perk. She is much better with her aggression, but still has a ways to go.

Yea Jewels gained about a lb since she was spayed too.
