Newbie question Hi, Another newbie here. I have been reading and studying Yorkies so have heard a lot of tricks. Here are my dilemmas: #1 How much water should a 12 week, 2.5 lbs puppy be drinking in a 24 hour period? #2. This is related-- since yesterday around 3:00PM to now 4:30PM (25.5 hrs) she has only gone a one time completely as we have caught her and moved her to the Rascal litterbox each time. There are a few drops of urine in the litter box so her scent is there. BTW: she slept thru the entire night without a pee break or a wimper.....and currently she has gone 7 hrs without going. #3 She is not eating much either. She is active and has not shown any symptoms of low sugar and I have given her some Nutri gel. Any suggestions from all the experts out there? Thanks Jan |
I'm definitely not an expert but I just wanted to give you my.opinions :) 1) I'm not exactly sure how much water a 12 week pup should drink. I keep a water bowl full at all times for both my dogs (a 15 month bulldog and a 15 week yorkie) I know for the bulldog I have to replenish at lest 3 times daily, but only once with the yorkie. 2) I'm really not trying to question you, but 7 hours? I don't know many humans that can hold out for that long! These pups can pee "a little" at a time and it would hardly be noticeable. 3) if she's not eating much(are you free feeding?)I suggest you put her in her pen(if you have one) with food and water and leave her alone for 30 mins to an hour so she can rest or eat if she's hungry. Sometimes puppies forget to eat/rest after playing for so long. Or she just may be a late night snacker. I've found with my pup that he eats the majority of his food at night when everyone else is sleeping. |
Eating/drinking and going I know 7 hours seems way out of line and that is why I am concerned. She has been sleeping since I posted so I am going to try again! She has been in her crate or I have been with her (within a few inches) the whole time--been watching her like a hawk and not on carpet so fairly easy to see if she dribbled. I take her to the dishes (both food and water)about every 1/2 hour and encourage her in any way I can think of. They have been out the whole time. Since she came home yesterday, I would say she has had about 4 oz. Not sure what to do. I have even gone so far as put water on my finger to get her to lick it off. I know how you feel as a new puppy Momma...it's so worrisome at times! I think you're doing all the right things...offering water/food and giving Nutrical. If it were me, I might be giving Nutrical every 4-6hrs or so until she seems more 'normal'...like maybe for the 1st couple weeks. I did that w/ each of my pups, just during the transition time, as a preventive measure. You could try sweetening her water too with a little Karo or syrup, that might entice her a little. If she doesn't show more of a water/food appetite pretty quickly here, then a trip to the vet would be a good idea. Inappetance in puppies can be very dangerous and is always a tell tale sign in puppies and dogs. Please keep us posted on her and I hope things are improving! |
Is she eating kibbles or canned food? They can be picky eaters sometimes. Maybe you can soak the kibbles in chicken broth (no sodium added) and see if she eats that. Or perhaps some boiled chicken. |
With Gizmo, when I rescued him he was very sick from low blood sugar. Have you tried hand feeding him his food and water? I would use a baby spoon as sometimes they will hand feed when they don't go to there bowls. I also agree with the nutrical every 4 to 6 hours. I did this for a couple weeks with Gizmo. Have you checked your babies gums to Make sure they are nice and pink? Watch them for any paleness, Gizmos gums were white and he was going into a hypoglycemic coma when I saved him. Any paleness of the gums could mean low blood sugar. |
I know that their pee is only like a few drops at a time at that age. sometimes too small to even see. If you are feeding wet food, I wouldn't be too concerned about the water amount. She'll drink water if she needs it, but when eating wet food, they get a lot of water/fluids from that. They will drink less than when eating dry kibble. |

Hmmm not sure if Gizmo is different, or he just drinks alot of water, but he has pretty good size puddles on his pad, about 3" to 4" around, and probably a good 7 to 10 during a 24 hour period. I let him free feed and drink, so maybe that is why. Like Colesmommy, Gizmo eats mostly at night and is pretty much a snacker during the day. Adding warm water to the kibble helped immensely in the beginning as well, as he really loved that the kibble made it's own type of gravy. Another thing he liked when his sugar was low was mixing the kibble with prescription AD wet food from the vet. Amazingly as soon as he felt better and was eating better, he wanted nothing to do with the wet food and preferred the kibble with warm water, for when he's in the mood for having something wet. Gizmo was only 9 weeks old when I saved his life and now at 3 months and 3 days, you wouldn't even recognize him. He's a little ball of energy now :-) I think not going for that long, you might want to have him checked, just to make sure things are ok. Is he staying awake and playing with you and stuff? |
I also just realized reading your first post again, that your baby is almost the same exact size as Gizmo, he s 2lbs 4ozs. I sure hope your pup feels better soon. |
Thanks for the advice. I had tried most of those things. She does seem to be getting better. Am considering feeding her frozen raw--what is everyone's opinion of that for a puppy? (I think it is Natures' Instinct). Thanks, Jan |
Depends what you are feeding them, kibble fed will drink more often than raw fed or home cooked. You may want to sit and feed her a few kibble at a time to make sure she is eating, or cook up some chicken or turkey as they are an easy protein to digest and much tastier to the dog than kibble. I would also use the plain stock you cooked the meat in instead of water. get some pedialyte from the chemist and nutrical on hand as you don't want the dog to go hypoglycemic if they are not eating. |
