I committed the cardinal sin
 
Today I had my grand spending the afternoon with me. She was real good. Jackson my 7 month old was not so good. I've been working on him "get back Jack" at the door before opening. Same today. The little fart ran out and took off. I live in a rural area and he took off down the road to my son's house. I chased him around their place several times. Took a treat with me hoping that would work. LOL Yea right. Not that time.

So I finally did catch him after about 15 minutes. I picked him up and again the little fart started growling, snapping and biting me. I spanked him. Told him he was a bad puppy and brought him home and put him in the crate.

I never let him outside without being on a leash, I give him credit for charging the door and accomplishing what he wanted to get done.

He was enjoying his get away way to much. There again I know I committed the cardinal sin in the yorkie world by the way I handled it, but the cars fly down our road and if one would have came by they would have never seen him and I would have been burying him instead.

Aww, cut yourself some slack- these things happen! I swatted Billi's behind a while back when she did the same thing. Ran clear down the street (our neighbors speed down our street like crazy) and charged our neighbors. Granted, she's tiny so it didn't scare or hurt them, but my gosh! Come when I call you! She coulda been kidnapped! She didn't even look both ways before crossing the street! LOL

We're not at all perfect, we learn from our mistakes. Hopefully that little stunt taught your little boy not to do that again!

Our back gate was left open by a contractor. I took Ian out to go potty, and we spotted the open gate at the same time. Ian looked at me, and took off! (I had just taken a shower, and only had a bathrobe on)! I ran through the house to the garage, and opened it. Ian was there, and I had to tell him to let't get a treat several times to get him to come in. I pretended to eat something to entice him. It worked, that God! I would have gotten arrested for indecent exposure if he hadn't come in. Now, I always hold him, and step outside, just in case. He did get a treat and lots of kisses for saving me from being on the news, and having a heart attack!

Thanks. They move so fast. The worse part was I called him by name, he stopped looked turned and ran as fast as he could.

I'm just glad he didn't get hurt! How scary. Luckily I don't have runners. My male has gotten out before and stood on the outside of the gate waiting for me to let him back in :p I think he knows how good he has it! lol

Little pissers....I sooooo understand your frustration....uggghhhhh mine are all runners and I consider myself an expert trainer...except with these guys, come here....fails me hugely and I can not figure out why.....

It can het really frustrating.
Unfortunately, he will expect to get hit next time this happens and will just try harder to get away.

Have you tried baby gates in your doorways?

We're only human so don't be too hard on yourself. There were couple times when I spanked Magnus's behind. The first time, he bolted out the door when I opened to throw something outside. Ran right into the street where a car was zooming our way. I screamed at the top of my lungs and luckily, the car slowed and stopped. I swear I nearly had a heart attack.

I'm a lot more careful now but there were couple times when he bolted. But I think he sort of learned b/c he'll go to the neighbor's yard or run up the sidewalk. Never onto the streets. I've had to sort of train my mom to make sure he won't be able to bolt so things have been good for over 2 years. :)

I'm glad Jackson is safe. One can only imagine the heartbreak if something did happen to him.

I don't agree with smacking or hitting a puppy or a dog for any reason.
I realize he could have been hurt, but why make your dog afraid of your hand by hitting him? Hands are for petting and loving, not hitting.

Well, I agree that hitting/spanking is wrong, but...
We do have tempers, and sometimes they snap, AND, we learn, just like you have. I'm thinking you probably won't do that ever again. :thumbup:

If it had been me...
I'd picked the little guy up by the Nape of his Neck, carried him that way till he got over his attitude. Just like his Mother would have. And, I bet he would have been licking your hand (apologizing) in under TWO minutes.

I get that people get frustrated, I really do... but just realize that now getting him back next time is going to be that much harder, because he is going to expect to be spanked when he DOES come. You just need to train your dog, and teach him a reliable recall. Have you ever even tried to work on it? Dogs don't come programmed knowing what to do. Of course running is going to be fun to a dog, and now that he knows he gets spanked when he is going to get picked up, why would he ever wanna come back to you?

I agree that if a loose dog is spanked when caught, the dog is even less likely to want to be caught the next time. I am a lousy trainer, but I believe that hugging my boys with relief when I've caught them has made them more likely to come to me. It's not a reward hug. They are sensitive enough to discern a relief-from-fear hug.

I know that could be frustrating, I would start some training to help in the future. I'm glad Joel isn't the running away type, even if he gets out the door when he's not allowed he doesn't run away but i've spent hours of training him around the door opening and the front yard. It really helps for later. He even checks the mail with me when he's loose:)

He's 7 months old. He's a climber. Deffinately an all new experience with me. I am working on making him get back away from the door when it's being open. So he's getting some very stern voice levels. Poor Bella looks at me like "what did I do?" She ran out the door once when I first got her and that was it. This litte fart is a tough cookie.

We have been working on the "come here" command. Bella still makes a note about it and makes a decision later. They are so cat like. Gotta love them for that. And yes after the running incident I have gotten sterner with him. Using treats for coming to me lots of praise.
