Excercise Ideas? I am looking for ideas to properly exercise my puppy in the house until she's had her vaccines(she's got another 2 weeks til shot #3) and can be taken for walks and to the dog park. She has no interest in playing in the backyard and I can get about 5 minutes of playtime out of her if I'm lucky before she goes in the doggie door. If I close the doggie door so she's stuck outside with me, she'll sit by it and cry until I give in. We play fetch in the house, she has an abundance of toys to play with and she plays with every single one of them, but she will get "the zooms" several times a day for at least 10 mins at a time so I'm pretty sure I need to find a way to exercise her more - before she kills herself running into a table leg or wall at top speed. Any ideas of ways I can wear her out inside besides playing fetch? |
I personally have never kept a puppy strictly indoors until after all vaccines. Never even heard of such a thing until joining YT. That is prime socialization time, and I would've gone crazy... are you allowing the pup into your own backyard at least? I think skipping dog parks and pet stores is a GREAT idea (def. too many germs) but yeah, don't be terrified to take your pup outside. Just be aware of any possible parvo outbreaks in your area. My vet was totally fine with Jackson going outside after his 2nd set of shots. I brought him home at 9 weeks and we immediately began outdoor potty training. I honestly find that mental stimulation tires Jackson out more than anything. Yes he requires a lot of exercise, too (even at almost 5yrs old), but trick training, or puzzle toys really tire him out mentally. If we don't get the proper exercise for the day, a 10 min training session with satisfy him to go lay down for a while. Especially pups, they get mentally tired out quick... work on some training... they can also get exercise in the process, work on 'come when called!' so he's also moving and learning at the same time. Check out Zak George - YouTube and kikopup - YouTube for some ideas and directions on how to teach tricks. |
I agree, this is also the time when the puppies get their bad habits. Training to sit, sit stay, down, take it, leave it, drop it, come when called, and gotcha are all good ways to tire them out. I do this with Gina several times a day, she starts to get destructive if we don't work her. Gina is almost 19 weeks old now, so I know what you are going through. Good luck. Cheers Quad:aimeeyork |
What about some mental stimulation like those treat puzzle toys? Nina Ottosson, Kyjen & Ethical Pet make some good ones that my dogs enjoy. |
She is still a baby. Don't be alarmed that she plays hard for awhile but takes long naps at this time. |
There are 2 games Magnus/Zoey loves to play indoors. One is to show them a toy and get them to want it, then I herd them into the laundry room, lock them in, and then hide it. When I let them out, they go searching for the toy. Second game. I take a toy and put it under a small blanket. Zoey "digs" to get to the toy. For Magnus, it needs to be harder so I put the toy in a pillow case and tie it in a knot. |
