so excited I'm so excited I just had to share. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, sorry if its not. Anyway, ive been working with my rescue pup Stanley for about 1 1/2 years to help him get over his fear issues. He' s made progress, but I felt like I had taken him as far as I could. I hired an in home trainer & today was our first session. Stan has always run away or shook & cowered when anyone tried to pick him up. Hes fine once you're holding him, but you have to catch him first lol. Well within the first 20 minutes of the session, Stanley was by my side like Velcro ASKING to be picked up! Ive fostered & worked with many pups over the years, and ive worked with several different trainers, but ive never see results like this! I still cant quite figure out how she did it. I'm so excited, I cant wait so see what happens next week. My DH & sons were shocked by the change tonight! DH even said it was "money well spent" lol. |

That's amazing and wonderful! Can you find out what the trainer did? Lexi has made a game of running away when I try to pick her up and that can be such a dangerous habit. She's not afraid, but she just thinks it's so funny. :(For safety, I need her to come to me and let me pick her up when necessary. I'm so happy that Stanley isn't afraid anymore! |

I got the trainer through a place called "canine company" . They seem to be a chain & I don't know if all of their trainers are as good. What she did looked so simple & I have no idea how it worked so quickly. She had me put a leash & harness on Stan & sat on the floor with him. She held the leash so that he had to face her when she called his name. When she spoke to him & he looked at her, she "rewarded" him by then allowing him to turn his back on her. She explained that she was showing him that he was under her (or my) control, and that nothing bad would happen to him even though he couldnt run away. She told me that as soon as she let him go he would run to me & follow me everywhere & that's EXACTLY what he did. She explained that in addition to his fearfulness, he was acting like a "Brat" who needed to know he was NOT in control. She explained the the leash exercise taught him that he was safe even though he had to give up control. I'm really not sure why it worked so well, but I'm really thrilled with the results! Stanley has always been teriffied of my oldest son, but tonight he allowed my son to pick him up without a chase!:D |

Almost forgot.... the trainer told me to be sure to put a light leash on Stanley when we are expecting guests, and to keep him by my side. She said that I shouldn't allow him to hide. She said not to make Stan interact with anyone, and not to have anyone even look at him. The important thing is to teach him he is required to be "present", and for him to learn its safe to do so. |
