Flea/Tick Mediction Question I was curious to those who use flea/tick medicine, how often do you apply it to your little one? The vet mentioned year round so I was curious if those here use it year round or only during certain months. |
Depends on where one resides. In PA, year round is probably wise, unless you're having a super cold winter. |
I use it year round also, in GA it does not get cold enough to kill all the nasty critters. |
I'm here in California by the beach, so all we get is fleas, and they are pretty much mostly just through the summer. So we mainly only treat our pets about 4 months out of the year :-) |
I live in MA and I use it year round. My Sheltie does agility and there are a lot of dogs that she comes in contact with where I take her for training. Years ago when I had to board my dog for a week she came home with fleas in Feb. So being around other people's pets I don't take chances. |
Yes, we use our Flea& tick drops year round. We tried two types of flea & tick drops. The first brand did not work well out here in the country; I found 3 ticks on Taffy when he was a pup!! We switched over to the Advantix II brand, and have had great results!! Use it year round. We also have a round wire-mesh doggy play-pen in the basement if we have to leave Taffy alone over a weekend...only once in a great while. Our sister-in-law takes him for walks, checks food & water, and changes his potty newspapers in his plastic shoe/boot tray we found at WalMart. To be on the safe side, I sprinkle a powdery trail of Hartz Flea powder around the whole perimeter of the outside of the pen. IF an. y fleas do hop in through the basement door while we are gone, that powder-ring around the outside of the pen stops the little pests dead! |
I do it during the warmer months. We haven't had any problems with skipping it in the winter, but it all depends on where you live. |
To "Cover's Mom" I enjoy the pictures of your little yorkies! Your "Cover" reminds me of my Taffy's blonde hair and nose shape. Have fun with your group of munchkins! |
Oooops, spelling boo-boo! Very sorry, I Meant To Type Your Yorkie's name Correctly: "Couver". My Kindle has a spell check, and it changed your little guy's name to "cover". My apologies! |
MD is tick central most of the time but I still only use it sparingly. Probably 2-3 months of the year do I apply it. K9 Advantix seems to last us a good 2 months of protection. If I am seeing more ticks, I apply it. But I haven't seen any all summer, so he hasn't had an application since around June. I see no need to put poisions on him if I don't absolutely have to, and I thoroughly check him over ever night, he gets bathed weekly and professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks. Heartworm meds are a different story, they are RX, and I give monthly. |
Research It is a good idea to research the specific brand of product you are applying for flea and tick prevention. I know some people had problems with Revolution and other people that still use it. Also, if your Yorkie is under 4-5 pounds reduce the dosage amount until you are certain the product is not causing negative side effects. You can always add more if needed but not take away if a problem occurs. These guys are so small and so precious. We do not want them to have a flea or tick problem so we need to use these products. A neighbor's poodle is allergic to fleas. That is one miserable dog when he gets a flea bite! Good luck! |
What great replies to the flea & tick med questions! It is interesting to see all the opinions about the use of the Flea/Tick Products! We are in the lovely, western side of the Shenandoah Valley of Va. We have had an unusually wet summer and everything is still green...no crispy, dried-out August/September foliage. Luckily, the thunderstorms have kept house fly numbers way down, but the ticks and mosquitoes are all around. Not only do we have the suburban species, but we have the rural and woodland types of disease carriers from all the wildlife in the state & national parks. Taffy gets a blood test at our vet's each year for Heartworm & Lymes disease before the vet gives us a new year's supply of Heartgard Plus Chews. It is actually cheaper to get the blood work test + 12 doses of Heartguard at our county vet's hospital all in one visit than to have the blood test done to get the Heartworm prescription and then take the prescription to another store or mail order co. We don't get 'hard frosts' here consistently till end of October to kill off fleas, then the ticks are back out again in April if it's warm. Taffy loves his walks in the countryside, but we have to keep him well protected, and renew his rabies shot every 3 years since there are many wild animals in the woods behind pastures & yards. Mother Nature Abounds!! |
