off lead yorkies ???
 

was wondering doe anyone else let their yorkie off the lead as soon as get to the park i let buddy off and either jog or walk with him but have not seen another yorkie off lead?

We live right beside a park and we let Alfie off all the time to chase his ball. There are other dogs there and the owners are pretty responsible, bigger dogs are generally on their leads. Where we play ball there is a good view all round an open area so we can get him back on his lead in plenty of time if we see a dog we don't know or are not sure of approaching.

I think a lot of that type permissiveness depends on how good shape you are in as well. As an older person, if something was to happen (fight/flight) it probably would be impossible for me to intervene as quickly as necessary. Therefore, I just never let my guys off their (retractable) leashes.

I let Holly off her lead at certain parks .. it has to be in an area that I can get her quickly and she's not going to be in the vicinity of other dogs (cant always avoid this) and have her mind her manners and not run up to people ... she is always on leash going into and out of the park and all the way to the section that I let her run in ... we have some trails in some wet lands/ wooded areas behind our apartment and I'll have her on leash walking there and then once on the trail will let her off ... then a far distance before getting back to the road she's back on leash ...

I know and love how much they like to be able to run free, but there is a fine line between giving them that freedom and letting them have to much freedom ... some owners believe its there right to NOT put them on a leash as there want there dogs to have "freedom" ... even if the dog is perfectly behaved and obeys every command there still are boundaries that should be set ....

Living in the Seattle area we have many off leash dog parks some are absolutely amazing with acres of running area .. one in particular has a fresh water river in it where they've set up designated area's for the dogs to swim and play fetch ... its awesome ..

Anyway as per usual I've ramble on way to much :-)

Off leash no not in public. When we are outside in the backyard I still don't because there are big hawks around the area, plus the area can be busy. Gus can walk loose leash fine and we don't use the retractable leashes.

Gus is about 7months old while, Shelby is just 12 1/2 weeks old. Both can't be fully trusted without their leashes. But around the house Gus does have the chance if he behaves to be off Leash. He did pass with flying colors basic puppy obedience at Pet Smart.

Both dogs we use harnesses on them. They still wear Their collars.

Except when Chloe is home in our own fenced in area she always wears her harness and leash when out and about. She is to much of a social butterfly and not a care in the world.

Here in Southern California we have very strict leash laws, so you cannot let your dog off leash, unless it is a designated dog park for off leash use. The dog park near my house at the beach is strictly on leash only, where as we have another dog park near us that is off leash, that one though has two separate areas, one fenced for large dogs, and another fenced for small dogs. That is the one I will take gizmo to once he's had all his shots, and I want to let him run without his leash. I did buy a 15 ft retractable leash to use at the leash park near my house at the beach though. I also want to take him to our dog beach we have about a 15 min ride from here, because its the only beach dogs are allowed on here.

I, like you OP am in the minority as well and let Kaji off leash all the time. I don't do that everywhere, like in my busy downtown LA neighborhood because it isn't safe. But at the park, or walking in the suburbs where my brother lives, to name a few. Kaji is very obedient and always comes when I call him. It also helps that Kaji hates people and will never leave or run to anyone he doesn't know. He runs back to mama instead. :)

I will let Dooney off leash at certain parks....I am always scouring for bigs dogs and any danger to him. He is very obedient and will not run to people, he loves the freedom!!!

I can't let Huey off leash because he goes deaf and forgets his name :rolleyes:
When I am at my parents, he is off leash in their yard even though he could squeeze out of their wrought iron fence if he wanted to, but they have 2 dogs and that keeps him in the yard, although he is never outside without a human monitoring him.

Even when Puff is in our fenced yard she wears her harness and 15 ft lead. I am too scared of a hawk or other predator carrying my baby off.

If I am in a safe area I will let mine off leash. I live on a small acreage so the get to run every once and awhile. They love it. I am lucky as they listen pretty well to my commands

Sophie Kate is only off leash in a fenced yard and I am with her the entire time. Like Huey Sophie Kate tends to forget her basic commands when off leash and I would never trust her (or the people around here).
