Can i get her nails cut?? Hello Everyone, I just wanted to know what age is good to get my dogs nails cut..her nails are soooooooo long!!! Thank You!! Chaz |
Age has nothing to do with trimming nails but I would let an expert do it for you if you have never done it. It really helps if you start at a young age so they become comfortable with it. It is fairly easy but you have to know where the quick is so they do not bleed. Either go to the vets or a grooming place. |
I would say that the time is now! If they are long or sharp, you should get on it! The longer you let them grow the longer the quick will grow, thats the part of the nail inside where the nerves and blood supply is. If you keep them trimmed it will never over grow. But if left to run wild, it will grow very long and you will end up with a very painfull cutting back that should only be done by a Prof. groomer or better yet.. your Vet! As you risk infection when you draw blood. I would start trimming ASAP! like when they are 6 to 8 weeks, even if you are not really taking anything off, its the handling and the going through the motions that will set them up for future grooming. Start too late and it may be a fight, but you can still get them used to it... And make sure your First Aid kit has septic powder in it (spelling?) Just in case you ever go too short and draw blood. |
Have your vet or groomer show you how to the first time, then get your self a good nail trimmer. Its not hard but you can only cut a small amount off at one time because of the quick(vein).. |
ok thank you all once again for keeping me informed.. I will take her to the Vet ASAP!! Those suckers hurt when she gets all excited...lol...lol...Thanks Again!!! xoxo Chaz |

nails You must bite the bullet and learn to cut nails...you do not want to run to the vet every two weeks for a trim...have the vet show you how..good luck |
