Helppp Constipation/royal canin I have 5 month old puppy who I've been feeding royal canin to since I've had him I noticed that if he eat a lot at once, or more than his normal amount through out the day it made his stools kind of soft, long story short, the past day and today I've noticed him grunting and straining to get it out and trying for 2 mins or more, and had some air behind it. Today he only did a lil button (sorry tmi), he seems quite constipated and like he was in discomfort, what can I do to help with the situation, it seems like the royal canin 29 isn't agreeing anymore. It was perfect for the first month I had him it gave him regular on time firm stools. As well how can I help un constipate him? |
I think pure pumpkin is one of the recommended food to give with that type of issue. If he strains too much, there's a good chance it'll cause other issues. Also, if you haven't already, I'd like to suggest you take a look at the food adviser post. |

You can try adding a little pumpkin to his diet. I buy the pumpkin pie mix that literally is JUST puree'd pumpkin. If he's not too bound up, it should soften up his stool and make it easier for him to do his business. |
Libbys Pure Pumpkin is great for constipation....the pie mix has additional spices added, that could possibly cause him GI upset....Royal Canin is a nutritious balanced scientifically formulated food for your baby....if he likes it, and he is eating it and he is not having issues with allergies, you can feel good giving it to your baby....and safe as well.....NO RECALLS!!! Be sure he is drinking plenty of water....any dry kibble can constipate your baby, if he is not drinking enough water. Maybe put a little warm water over the kibble, so he gets additional water with his meal.... |
Agree with Yorkiemom1 and: If you're feeding dry kibble, the best way to feed a puppy is to divide the daily ration into 3-5 feedings per day. This prevents him from overeating, which can be a problem if he doesn't drink enough water. Kibble will cause constipation if water is not consumed and can even cause a blockage. Feeding several meals per day also allows you to see exactly how much he's eating, helping to spot any problems early on. |
I agree with what everyone else has said, however Gina had an allergic reaction to the RC Yorkie 29, since then she has been on the RC development puppy, and has had no problems with it. I can only get the RC Development from my vet, as none of the pet stores sell it, they only sell the RC small puppy. Hope your puppy gets better soon. Cheers Quad |
