At what age does a male yorkie reach/end puberty? I was doing some research on neutering, and I found this: 1) Loss of testosterone as a result of desexing may result in immature development of masculine characteristics and a reduced body musculature The testicles are responsible for producing testosterone: the hormone that makes male animals look and act like male animals. It is the testicles that make male animals develop the kinds of masculine, testosterone-dependent body characteristics normally attributed to an entire animal. These include: increased muscle size and development; reduced body fat ; mature penis development; mature prepuce development (mature penis sheath development); the ability to extrude the penis from the sheath (prepuce) and the suppression of development of feminine characteristics (mammary gland development, milk production etc.). Desexing, particularly early age desexing, may limit the development of mature masculine features such that they remain immature and juvenile looking and cause the neutered animal to have a reduced muscle mass and strength compared to an entire animal of the same size and breeding. I know each breed tends to age differently, but, I don't think neutering at 6 months is good based on the research that I did. Also, neutered dogs need about 25% less calories than intact dogs because testosterone burns a lot of calories. |
Thank you for doing research regarding neutering your male pup before going forward with it! By no means am I saying not to have him fixed...this is your decision.I just love the fact you researched it! I'm not sure when they reach "sexual maturity" I don't think of it as a "one size fits all". I would definitely be concerned about whether he has matured physically(if his growth plates are done "getting into position") because he would need his sexual hormones to complete this imo. I'll be looking forward to seeing others responses |
I have read in other posts that around 8 months before the growth plates are closed. I know I want Parker neutered but definitely want to wait til I know that his growth plates are closed. I know an x ray could determine that but would rather not go to that extent. Going to wait as long as I can with these factors in mine: squatting vs raising his leg, baby teeth having to come out. Hopefully somewhere between 8 months to a year. |
Neutering will not effect squatting VS lifting leg. My Aussie was neutered at 3 months (pound puppy), my teddy was neutered at 6 months and both lift their leg while peeing. I did have to go back and have Teddy's baby teeth extracted since I didn't know about retained teeth. My new boy bear will be neutered at 8 months, so I can do it all at once. And personally, I do not want want all the attributes or look of an intact male. My teddy is well musculated from lots of exercise I don't need any more bulk. My Aussie is now 12 and we never had any issues with his boy parts not developing properly everything works as it should minus the puppy making part. |
runner1980, You need to take my comments about this with a "grain of salt", given that I raise/train my animals a lot differently than most here, but... I alter my Females, but, not my Males... Like you stated in your OP, their size and proportions are influenced by alteration, and their "attitude" as well. I maintain a very traditional "Pack" environment, and having a "strong" Alpha Male is just what I want. I expect him to be very territorial and protective for me, my property and his Pack in general. I will say that I can not speak for every unaltered Male, but, not altering them may lead to a less social animal, that many of the Users here would not appreciate, though it's just right for me. |
