is it to late to get ears to stand up? My fluffbucket is almost 3 months now ... actually come to think of it she was born on the 22nd of may to today is the 22nd :-) Her ears are flopped over and seam to be getting more flopped over as she grows more hair. I know that shaving the top 1/3 of the ear helps them stand up but I am in no way confident to do the cutting/trimming/shaving ... I know can take her to a groomer but it seams the breeder screwed up and gave her her first vaccine to early basically nullifying it according to our vet ... so she has her next vaccination is on the 7th of September and this is when I get the all clear to let her be out in the real world of other dogs ...... So will it be to late by then to have our groomer trim and shave her ears to try and get them to stand up .... Obviously I love her regardless of ear that stand up or are floppy :D :cool: :aimeeyork :thumbup: |

Saw the pics, much like my Biewer Mia and her sisters and brother...I personally would let them do what they want at this point. Mia's ears would be super huge if stood up! lol |

If she's only 3 months now, I'm guessing she's still teething or starting to teeth. That's probably where all the calcium is going. I've read some posts on where you can tape the ears(?) to help with the perking... |
I would shave the hair off her ears and tape them up for 4-5 days. Take the tape off for a day and assess the ears. If up, great. If not, repeat. You can do this until the dog is 6-9 months. I don't think early shots caused this. Maybe a busy breeder wasn't paying attention or was a bit lazy. Sometimes ears will flop when they are teething. |
Shaving the ear hair will help a lot! I don't know how early your breeder vaccinated, but we all have different protocols. I've gotten ears to stand as late as a year old, so it's not too late. In fact, 3 months can be normal if they are teething. |
Thanks for that ... the breeder my wife bought her off was from what I can tell a "pet" breeder .. she bought Holly for me while I was in hospital ... she had floppy ears the first time I saw her at 12-13 weeks old .. the ear where not shaved by the breeder and she still has her dew claws .... our vet said she was given her vaccination to early as well... so I don't think she was a "professional" breeder ... Holly shows no sign of abuse and is almost perfect in personality so she's a perfect pet .. I suspect she may not be totally a pure bred .. but at this stage that does not bother me .... I'm not comfortable shaving her ears and don't have the equipment to do it either ... so after her next vaccination and our vet gives the all clear to be out in public, especially a groomers, (This is on the 7th Sept.) I'll have them shave her ears and see how it all goes ... and maybe look into taping if I feel comfortable doing that .. I have started mixing plan low fat yogurt in with her food for more calcium as well .. she seams to like that so don't mix wet puppy food in any more :-) At the end of the day floppy or stand up she's awesome :-) |
It is not to late at all for make her ears stand. When pups are teething the ears will go up and down. You can actually trim a lot of the ear hair off using a small pair of scissors. Just go slow and trim the hair on the edges as close as you can then lay the scissors flat against the upper part of the ear and trim as much hair off as you can. I usually trim half of the ear hair off. Also you can buy some unflavored Knox gelatin and sprinkle about 1/4 teaspoon in her food twice a day. You can find that at the grocery store in the section where they sell the jello boxed mixes. |
I agree that the pup is still young enough to work on the ears. Getting the weight of the hair off them is important. If you don't want to shave them you could try trimming some of it off with some scissors while she is resting. It is a good idea to get her used to having her ears touched and her hair combed. You don't want her to freak out when you take her to the groomers. Combing her everyday will get her more relaxed about being groomed. |
poppets stood on their own a few weeks shy of one year- i remember psoting on here in a panic thinking they wouldn't stand, and i'd given up on them and stopped trimming, when all of a sudden up they popped! so 3 months is certainly not to late! |

I noticed 2 days ago her left ear started drooping more and yesterday by the afternoon it looks more like a beagles ear ... totally flopped over from the base of the head down .. I haven't been brave enough to trim the hair on the edges of her ears but will try and do that today .. I'm been mixing plain yogurt with her kibble and she's eating that so hoping its getting her more calcium ... she gets half a sweet potato "fry" and a greenie each day too ... Anyway thank you every one for all your advise you're all awesome :-) |
