My brand new 4 month old puppy that won't eat :-( I just days ago adopted a beautiful Yorkie puppy named Louie! He is amaizing, I am just so thrilled to have him in our lives. He is doing great! He follows me all around the house, plays with the kids and Is just the most active little guy. Only problem is he is not eating barely anything :-( I have had a bowl of food that he is used to eating out for him for 2 days and he has barely touched it, but REALLY wants to eat the cat food?! Does anyone have any ideas for me, I'm desperate and worried he will become Hypoglycemic.... |

Keep him away from the cat food. It can make him sick. Are you using the same food as the breeder used? You might also try hand feeding him a piece at a time to get him started. |
Yea, I am using the same food as the breeder did.. I will try the chicken broth idea and the mixed canned food, they sound easy enough! Thank you.. |
Congrats on your boy. You can use the chicken as Morgan has said. You can shred some chicken and add it to his kibble, also adding a little water and mixing it all in together. Peanut was sick not too long ago and he wasn't eating or drinking, I did this for him and it worked really well- he was able to get hydrated and take some food in. |
My new puppy Lola isn't a big eater either. I usually mix a teeny bit of cottage cheese or yo baby vanilla yogurt in with her food and she devours it! I too have to keep her away from Teddy ( my older dogs ) food. |

Don't worry too much... He or she is very young and losing its teeth. Dry food is the best option, but at this stage it hurts a bit because of the losing teeth, so wet it a bit even if it is with water and it will help. Don't let him eat the cat food, as someone else mentioned, it may get your puppy sick. If wetting the kibbles does not work, take him to the vet for a check up as it may be something else and you don't want to wait until the last minute to figure that out. Lastly, be aware of him eating other stuff around the house!!! Good luck! |
One other teensy idea.....:) Just in case all the other brilliant suggestions don't work.... Harry HATED eating out of a bowl, still does :confused: So I put his food on a plate for him instead - problem solved!! He's just got to learn to use the knife and fork now....:D Good luck! Congratulations on your new baby boy, Louie. Everyone has given great advice above. I had to hand feed almost all of Max's kibble his first year. He liked to perform tricks for each piece. I sped up the process sometimes by playing "Kibble in the Kong", loading the kibble into the Kong toy and making a big production out of it. Getting them excited about eating helps. Adding a second dog changed Max's eating habits. As Rhetts_mama wrote, cat kibble can make him sick. It's too high in fat for a dog. |
Cookie won't eat out of her bowl hardly at all; I have to dump it on the carpet. On the occasions she does eat out of the bowl she'll just drop the kibble on the carpet and eat it from there. Sometimes you might need to make eating fun just like with a baby. E.g., Here comes the airplane... Choo-choo coming into the station... Here comes the missile.... Here comes the paratrooper... Here comes the laser... Here comes the boomerang... Here comes the kangaroo... Here comes the helicopter... If all else fails, give some Nutrical -- that often gets their appetites going again |
