What is the best harness to use for a Yorkie Hi All, I was wondering what kind of harness/ leash you all use for your Yorkies. I know that harnesses are better considering Yorkies have a delicate trachea. I have a 5 month old Yorkie who uses a harness (thin one) now but is pulling me a lot and sometimes she kinda makes the chocking sound. We are trying to work with her to stop the pulling but wanted to know if there is another type of harness that will work a little better. |
I have Buddy Belts for all 3 of mine...just love them! They are very nice leather with silver hardware. One of our members here, Maximo, sells them. People rave about the BBs. |
I use a cheap harness that I bought from walmart, but I've modified it in couple ways to make sure it doesn't choke and is reflective. I did hear a lot of good things about buddy belts. I don't think I've heard/read any complaints from anyone that uses it or have switched over. |
I use Buddy Belts & I also have a Choke Free harness. Maximo sells BBs here & LilSis sells the CF...both at discounts for YT members. :) I'd say at 5 months, you can probably invest in a Buddy Belt. The CF harnesses have to be sized exactly & she might grow an inch or two around her girth. The BBs are adjustable - like a normal belt. They're expensive compared to the fabric harnesses, but I think they're well worth it. Here's a link to both: BB - Buddy Belt Harness CF - Pet Collars and Harnesses that do not choke dogs and cats |
I just ordered the Choke Free harness but the Vel-Pro Mesh version. It can be washed and looks much softer to use than a leather strap version. I'm excited as it's to arrive by the end of the week :-) |
We use Buddy Belts! We love them, I have 2. Peanut has worn them all day before and he doesn't seem bothered by it. He goes in lakes, rivers, beaches, sand, desert, and snow and it looks brand new. The leather on the inside is super soft, like butter. The leather on the outside is durable. A couple times I had to pick him up with his leash, really fast- due to big loose dogs coming up. He wasn't at all bothered by it. I felt comfortable doing that because I know the quality of the BB and I know how it fits on Peanut, where it wouldn't hurt him. I would never use anything else. :D |
Buddy Belt  them |
Thanks everyone! I'm gonna check out the buddy belts today. I have 2 Chihuahua's (2 year old female and 1 1/2 male) that work great with a mesh harness because they don't pull as much. However Leila is another story...she pulls and pulls and pulls! She has much more energy than my Chi's which I though would be impossible and weighs more than them too ( almost 6 pounds at 5 months old). Its hard trying to walk all 3 at the same time especially with Leila pulling in another direction. I spend the majority of our walk trying to get myself untangled. I even got the Couplers leash thinking that maybe one of my other dogs can help her with slowing down. So not the case!! She just pulls them too! Lately, Ive been having my daughter ride her bike and run her around the block a couple of times which seems to work a little better with the walking situation but I have noticed every now and then she starts to make the hacking noise for pulling to much. I bring her with me everyday to work and also take walks on my 1 hr lunch break too but she seems to want to sleep most of the day. She has the most energy right in the morning and right before we go to bed! |
I use Buddy Belts, Maximo sells them. They are wonderful. I just can not say enough about them. Also I like that is I have to pull him up in an emergency I can without any hesitation. |
I have a puller too. And you're right - if you put them on a coupler, they drag the other one around. :( I've started taking her on a separate walk in the evening. It takes us FOREVER because everytime she pulls, I stop & make her wait until there's no more slack on the leash. But she's really getting better. It's just extremely tedious. I also got her a Bungee Puppee leash. That didn't work out so well. It's supposed to discourage pulling, but it does the opposite for us. Maybe it works better with larger dogs. |
I've seen the Buddy Belts posted on here before but never given them much thought. I just took a closer look and I really like them now. I'm going to have to get one soon. |
