How do your fur kids tell you what they want? Adie stares at the object in question and you have to understand the signal. For example; if she wants to lay on my side when I am reclined on the couch she will just stare at the spot where she wants to be. If something is in her way she will stare at it. If she wants to play ball she will sit and either stare at one of us or at the basket that contains the balls. I could go on but you get the picture. Skeeter on the other had gives one sharp bark if he wants a treat, or wants to go outside, if it is time for bed or he wants to be picked up to join us on the couch. It is the same sharp bark but given the circumstance we pretty much know what he means. Before I could talk DH out of feeding him bites of pizza he would sit in front of DH and whine then give that sharp bark. DH eats a little frozen pizza most nights. Skeeter still tries it but it doesn't work anymore. LOL. When I groomed my sweet little Cassie she would put up with it for just so long then put her little paw on my hand. With that she was saying "Please stop now." When she started going to our groomer I told her about it and she agreed that it was her signal to stop. We would pick her up and cuddle her for a bit the start in again. (Don't forget that Cassie was a shy and sweet little girl. She would never act up or disobey. It just wasn't in her nature.) |
Gina comes up to the couch and stands on her back legs and stares at me, if after a few seconds I don't notice her, she will give me a growl and will jump up and down, she loves to growl, rarely barks. When she wants to play with a toy, she goes to her toy box and gets it out, then brings it to whoever she wants to play with. When she gets up from her nap she comes straight to me, then we go over to her pad, which she won't use, then sits or lays down while I put the lead on her then we go outside. She's a very verbal, sweet, and totally rotten little girl, and I wouldn't have her any other way. Cheers Quad :aimeeyork |
If Prince wants outside and it's a non-potty emergency or a #1, he will just stand by the door. If he has to go really bad, esp. #2, he will scratch at the door. If he wants food, he will run back and forth to the kitchen...especially when you are out there. If he wants a treat, he will run over to the treat shelf and sit or put he will jump up and put his front paws on the shelf. Sometimes he will talk to me if he wants a treat. During the evening, he will sometimes run back and forth to bedroom to get me to go to bed...or he will sit on the couch and talk. At night, in bed, he will talk to me if he needs to go outside, or he may just want a treat. He has also learned to paw at me if he wants me to pay attention to him to find out what he wants. Ricky doesn't tell me much of anything:( I haven't had him long though...so I guess we need a little more time together before I begin knowing him like I know my other dog My moms yorkies have learned to sit on her feet if they want attention. She simply lifts her legs and they run up them like an elevator up to their laps. |
morgan looks at me and he barks and does twirlies |
I have one talker. The other 3 don't really "tell" me anything. Bevo "talks"... Can't really describe it, sort of a weird whine... Then he will look at what he wants and back at me repeatedly... I don't care if an hour passes...he does not give up until he gets what he wants |
It's amazing how they learn to communicate. Max sits with a toy in his mouth when he wants to play. He performs sits and stares at me when he wants his meals or to go out. Sometimes he makes sounds like he is trying to talk. Sounds like Astro or Scooby Doo. Teddy puts his paws on me. Then I have to ask him multiple questions. When I get to the right one, he turns in a circle to say "yes." |
Lambeau will stand up on his back legs and tap on me with one his front paws to get my attention and if I don't respond quickly enough, he will add a quick bark. This will continue with increasing taps & barks until I have to respond or be driven nuts!! He is VERY persistent. |
Teddy gives me a low glutteral growl with a stare when he wants my attention and bear just whines |

I agree with many of you especially with Julie. Totally agree with ynauman :) |
Standing at my feet and wanting up,,grumble, grumble. I NEED OUT!,,high pitched yap. The water bowl is empty,,whine. The little guest that we had for 16days had a bell hung on the back door. She didnt tap it with her nose, she would stand up and SLAP the bell. This ment OUT,FEED ME,IM BORED lets play. |
Gwenni will stare almost obsessively at what she wants and sometimes let out this horribly high pitched whine like she's in pain. Finnigan is more vocal about it... he will whine/ bark/lick/paw etc... until he has your attention and you follow him to what he wants. Never thought about the differences until you posted that question. Good conversation starter. :) |

And if Harry wants fresh water, he pushes the bowl around with his nose, slopping what's left over the floor.... And if he REALLY wants to go to sleep - there's only one place good enough for him - between Andy's legs  so he pushes them apart with his front paws.... And if he wants to come out with us - he reverses up to me or sits looking very hopefully on the dining room table (yes, I know!! ;)), if he doesn't, then he goes to bed.... And the funniest thing was when it got REALLY hot over here a month or so back.....Harry sat and just stared at the switch where the fan is plugged in.....:D Sally + Harry x |
I guess its a yorkie thing? I forgot that Tyler likes to moan for attention. Usually its because he wants me to pick him up. LOL (He's a mama's boy) |
