What's the difference between a male and female? Besides the obvious, lol, what's the difference? As in temperament. I just got in touch with someone who has 2 females and 3 males that'll be available in 8-9 weeks. I already have a spayed 5yr old female. Should I get another female or go for a male? Thanks! ;) |

Personally I don't really see a difference ( besides the obvious :D ) but I have always had males and females so they are all the same to me.. |
I have noticed the female dogs we have had over the years have more of a I am going to do what I want when I want attitude and just a general attitude and the boys we have had seem to be very chill. I love the attitude personally. But you might want to get a male just so you have one of both :D |
I have 2 males. I originally was going to get a little female to pare up with my older male, but the females were fewer and farther between and I couldn't find a female that I wanted to adopt. I thought for sure I was going to have some kind of problem by putting 2 males together, but to my surprise, it couldn't have went smoother. My new dog is very submissive and easy going, so he fits well with the cranky old man who is used to ruling the roost!! I think a lot of it depends on your dogs personality and the personalities of the puppies, more than the sex. I am not sure if the breeder is willing to let you bring your dog along...but maybe your little girl could help you pick out the puppy...or maybe if you explained your females personality to the breeder, she would be able to help you pick out the puppy that would best mesh with your female. |
In my opinion, males seem to be more affectinate and clingy. Girls, more dependent. |
First, I would consider the breeder, their health guarantee, health testing, etc. Second, I would look at the pup's temperament and personality and disregard if they are male or female. |
Gracie is my first Yorkie so I am no expert. You have a female so you are familiar with her personality. I do think they are all different. My girl is the most loving and friendly dog ever. She is typical terrier but she loves people and wants to be friendly to people and dogs. I debate getting another often and I am leaning toward getting another female. I have just seen too many people on YT complaining about marking males. I have had many male dogs in the past and never had a marking problem so I don't understand why so many have that issue with the Yorkie. Just don't want to take the chance of having that issue. |
Some say that the females can be more stand-offish. That's certainly true of my 3 year old female, but not my 4 month old. My male is the ultimate "cool dude" and a lover. I think it comes down to individual personality types. |
I believe it comes down to the individual dog. However, my boys' breeder and other breeders have told me that Yorkie boys tend to be more affectionate and cuddly, and the girls are more independent. That doesn't mean that there aren't affectionate girl Yorkies. |

Having raised yorkies for over 16 years I can honestly say that it really depends on each dogs individual personality, whether male or female. Yorkies are like children, they are all different in how they behave. I have had males and females that were very affectionate total lap dogs and I have had males and females that were very independent and were not real lap dogs. Pups often follow the personality of the parents so when selecting a puppy it is important to ask about the parents personality. Of course this can be difficult to judge if the parent have opposite personalities. In that case sometimes the puppy will take after the mom and sometimes after the dad. |
From my experience, Males are going to be a little to a lot more protective of the Pack (you and Female), will develop territorial instinct and as they grow, become a little pesky toward the Females, establishing a dominant roll. When I add one, I always choose... Same Breed, Opposite Sex, (so for you, a Male should be considered this time) About 2 years apart (but 5 is not excessive) Alternate sex as additional animals are added. I really recommend the M/F combos. They can establish some very special loving and caring relationship with the other, which we Humans can't match in any way. And this can occur weather they are altered or not. My Adult Male Sneakers and Adult Female Becca absolutely love each other dearly. It makes me feel very good, knowing that I was a part of making them so happy. I sincerely hope that your experience with having several animals will be as gratifying as has mine. |
I don't notice a difference, I have had both. It depends more on their personality than gender. |
