Brody is snapping at another dog...? Our daughter and SIL have a 5 month old (40 pound!) standard poodle puppy named Jack. They live next door and we spend a lot of time together, so its important that the two dogs become friends! Jack is VERY sweet, but also VERY BIG and rambunctious. The couple of times we have gotten the two of them together, Jack has barked excitedly and been very jumpy/lunge-y (although DD does address that behavior with Jack, correct him and tell him NO, but he is still learning!) Anyway, even though I am holding him, Brody goes NUTS... barking and SNAPPING at Jack! Even snapping at my shirt sleeve! It's hard not to laugh because he is soooo stinkin' SMALL... but my instincts are telling me NOT to allow that kind of behavior. I'm kinda using the guideline that if it's not acceptable for a BIG dog to do, then it shouldn't be acceptable for a little dog either. So I put my fingers around his snout (gently but firmly) and told him "NO". But I figured I should bring the issue to the table of the experts and get your advice and opinions. Thank you! Lynn |
I'd love to get some ideas also. Zoey's become... less friendly lately. She gets as much social interaction as Magnus but she just hates strangers and/or other dogs. She even tried nipping at this nice old dog that was just standing there quietly. This was partly my fault b/c she's never actually gone close enough to another dog, I thought she'd be ok to be let out of the backpack. And usually, she calms down a bit after zipping back/forth but this time, she wasn't. I think she tests the dog or the person to see how they react. If it she doesn't see much of a come back, she'll go for it. Of course, I immediate reprimanded her. She won't listen, take treats, or anything when she's in "that mode". There were few times where she was so in her own zone that while trying to reprimand/calm her down, she nipped at my hand. It almost feels like she gets possessed by a demon sometimes. *sigh* |
bumping for more answers. I have had that problem with all three. Puppies like Vinnie and Brody are just reacting the only way they know how. I honestly think let em go, he may bark and growl like Vinnie, I loudly say no and he chases them, there is no physical alteration.....the other pup will let him know how much he will take. As lonnggggg as the other dog is socialized... |
Gosh, bumping again as I have the same problem with Teena. I blame it on her first 2 years of being "locked in a laundry room with a big mean dog", but maybe there's more to it than that. |
I think it's a little humorous that 4 of us have the same problem & no one has had any advice. Could this be a common problem that's uncorrectable? |
Same problem with Bella. She's fine with my other 3 dogs, but goes psychological crazy if we see a dog when we're out. |
