Help! Disgusting problem.... Hi. I don't know if anyone else has had experience with this problem, but our little 14-week-old Mia is having bathroom "issues". She has learned to go on the puppy pad, very well, so I am thrilled with that! The problem is that her poo keeps getting stuck to her bottom. Sometimes it seems like she is straining to go, but I think it is just that there must be poo from the previous BM that is obstructing her elimination. Her poo is soft, but formed, so I don't think it is a constipation problem. Is this "normal" for yorkies? And, if so, how do you keep their bottom clean? (I'm cringing at the thought of cleaning her again. It is hard to get her still long enough to get the dirty job done!) Somebody please advise! |
I would keep her hair trimmed around the area and use a sensitive baby wipe every time she goes poo. |
I agree, keep her little rear end clean. This is sometimes a problem for little pups. You can use a baby wipe or a wet cotton ball. You are correct that a little leftover poop is probably obstructing her next one. |

Be very careful trimming, especially if she is wiggly. A cut to the anus can be very serious. |
If you're going to do it yourself, I'd like to suggest you have someone help you hold her. Perhaps distract her with treats so she won't move around so much. You can also use a comb to use as a barrier so you won't accidently hurt her. I also wipe their furry little butts after potty. :D |
I think we have all delt with this problem, Keep the hair cut from around her anus.I use hair clipper's on Luci and that take's care of the problem also do the under part of her tail. Anne/Luci:p |
Thank you, everyone! After I posted, I bathed her and realized there was more than one clump that needed attention. It took me about 10 minutes to dislodge it! Oh.....how.....GROSS! Anyway, once I got it out I took the scissors and trimmed what I could. That was an ordeal! I was on my own tonight, so no-one to help hold her. I think poor Mia was so happy to be clean that she was trying to be on her best behavior. :-) I sure hope it does the trick. I don't want a repeat of that any time soon! Thanks for the advice. Even though I figured it out, it is nice to know that others have dealt with this, and that I'm on the right track. You are a great support network for us new Yorkie mommies! |
Ziva needs to be trimmed often as she is so furry all over;). We also found that certain treats with a gummy composition makes the problem worse. |

As I tell my friends... "Once you've been pooped on... other things just don't seem as gross..." LOL |

Poo sticking happens all the time. (Especially when grandma visits and sneaks her some table food.) If you're trimming with scissors, invest in a small round tipped pair. You don't want to cut anything down there. Also, just remember: When the poo gets stuck to the rump, pick her up ** rear-end facing away from your body ** & just carry her straight to an empty sink. If you have a nozzle sprayer, just spray the hind quarters. It all comes off. Even if she hates bath time, she'll probably be glad you rinsed her.:) Good luck. |
I don't think anything to do with my pups grosses me out anymore. At our house, we call those "danglies." Most of my dogs act like they are going to die if they have one and one will just freeze and not move. Usually they will come off with a tissue, etc. |

And I still remember the odor from when he pooped on me. -_- The smell of ammonia was making my eyes water. ROFL |

ain't that the truth, with Lola it only happens once in while but she is so indignant and upset about it you can tell from a mile a way that she has a dingleberry stuck, so momma has to pick her up sort of backwards and to the laundry sink we go, I just let warm water run over that area till everything comes off, sometimes I need to take a little scissor to it. Just wait till you are running late and dressed up nice and your pup does a half in half out poop that is stuck. Now you are left to figure out how to get it out, LOL that should be on that TV show dirty jobs. |

LOL just saw this after I posted, that's what we call them to. Dingleberries just come with the territory of owning a dog, I am assuming other breeds have them to, can you imagine dealing with this on say a big Irish setter or a sheep dog, OH my that would be a chore:D |

Thanks for the warnings! I guess my "gross" scale is going to be on a curve from now on! LOL! Not looking forward to diarrhea all over me--hope that one never happens! I'll be keeping her hair trimmed from now on, and will make butt inspection a daily habit! |

Some little hints will help a lot. Get a helper and do this on a counter in a well lighted area. Cover the counter in news paper. Use gloves if you are ucked out. Buy blunt round tipped scissors, a medium fine comb and some coconut oil. Slide the comb between the poop ball and the skin. Cut against the comb. When the poop ball is gone, rub a tiny amount of coconut oil on the potty area, comb the hair away from the anus, about the size of a ping pong ball area. Cut the hair with little the small safety scissors. (Later if you do use clippers or an eyebrow trimmer, be sure to shave away from the anus, going over the anus can cut the delicate tissue !) After Your baby potties use a baby wet wipe on her bottom. It is ok to use a quick light swipe of the coconut oil to keep poo from sticking. Hope This Helps. |
Do you mean it's getting stuck in her fur / bc of her fur in the area? Or, are you saying she can't get it pushed out fully, so that it's getting stuck in the rectum? If it's getting stuck in the rectum, I'd probably want a vet to take a look and/or maybe have her anal glands checked. |
You all are a great resource! And to Wylie's mom, it is poop stuck in the fur. I gave her a real good trim, and things have been good since then, but I'm definitely keeping a closer eye on it! |
chester needs some extra fiber at least 4% in his food, and keep her hiney trimmed and the wipes as well |
