Exercise in heat? Ok so who ever said yorkies do not need a lot of exercise never met Molli. It was cool the other morning and we went for a 20 minute walk! Then went for a few blocks at night too! Today it was back above 100 and Molli is just getting so wound up because I can't take her out in this heat! She even attacked Chibi over a toy earlier- he's ok but I did not like her being that mean to him. I am trying to play with her in the house but our apartment doesn't have much running room. Anyone have any other suggestions to wear her out?? |
I take mine out every day regardless of temperature. I just moderate the time out, when it's really hot. Mine really cut up when they want to go, but, are just as willing to shorten the trip, when it's uncomfortable. ;) |
One of the games we play is hide and seek. I basically put them in the laundry room then hide the toy. I let them out after and they'll both get all excited and search for the toy. Another game is when I put a toy or a treat into a towel or small blanket. Tie in a knot and let them at it. Magnus/Zoey will dig/pull/bite on the the towel/blanket to get to the toy/treat. |
I hear you!! Jackson drives me absolutely nuts in the summer because it's often just sooo hot, and even though he WANTS and needs exercise, he cannot stand heat + humidity so then he doesn't want to do much. All I have to say is thank god for my dads house with the pool, I try to bring him over there 3 times a week so he gets lots of swimming. Otherwise, we do short bursts of fetch outside, he lasts 10-15 mins before he's too hot, or play a bit in the house, or I take him on errands with me, and we visit a pet store, etc... just so he has something to do. Or we occasionally just have a lazy day and I make him lay down or play with an interactive food toy or something lol. |
whats crazy is I haven't walked her this much before- I only started taking her on longer walks because she gained some weight from medicine she was on but now it's like she expects to go out and throws a big temper tantrum if I don't take her. She is such a brat! I wish I knew someone with a bigger house/yard. |
You said you live in an apartment... Are the stairs outside? Or maybe you can play fetch in the hallway for a bit?.... |
Stairs are a very good resource for exercising ! I just happen to have a two story, and some live on the second+ story of apartments. One need to choose (for instance) a Ball which is not extremely reactive on the bounce. Just roll/pitch it down/up the stairs, and say "fetch" :D Use short throws to get your Dog used to maneuvering, and increase as you evaluate its ability. ;) |
