Question about a yorkie puppy I have an 8 week old yorkie puppy and I also own his mommy. The other two puppies from the litter have went to their new homes but I intend to keep this little guy. My question is I notice he still tries to nurse quite often and sometimes his mother will allow it and sometimes she won't. He eats his puppy food and drinks water very well so I don't feel that it is a hunger issue. I've never been in this situation where I've owned a mother dog and one of her pups so I just need to know the right way to go about breaking him from nursing. I believe her milk has dried up. It seems to just be a comfort thing. Any advice is appreciated!:) |

I understand 12 weeks is best but my situation didnt permit me to do so. I adopted the mother from a friend of mine when she had already been irresponsibly bred and was close to giving birth so I accepted the responsibility of taking care of mom and the puppies for the first 8 weeks but I also work full time and it was getting very difficult to keep up with 3 puppies. What I need to know is at what age should the nursing stop and should I intervene or let the mother take care of it? |

Please dont get in the middle of momma doing what God gave her the instinct to do...she will teach this pup everything it needs to know to survive and develop into the best little fella his genetics will allow. You can supplement his feedings with soft kibble or gruel, but allow him to continue to nurse...momma will gradually wean him...and she will even allow him to suckle at nap times, like a baby sucks on a pacefier....let his momma handle his weaning....when she thinks he is old enough to stop nursing completely and when she doesnt wnt him suckeling at all, she will run him off.....you just introduce food on the side that he will be learning to eat...momma will teach him how to do that too.....you stay out of it and let his momma wean him like God intended..... |
Thank you. As I said the situation is unique because I plan to keep this little male and his mother so he will not be leaving to go to another home. I wasn't sure if there was a certain age that it should be discouraged. Yes I am a newbie at this but I took this on to be sure the mother and pups would be taken care of. I did not do the breeding so I am just looking for friendly advice. |

Let me also add that I plan to have the mother spayed and the pup neutred ASAP and have been told it cannot be done until she is finished nursing. Believe me I am trying to do all the right things :) |
Let me say again 12-14 weeks was not possible for me with me working full time. Again i done this out of kindness because the girl that had her did not want to deal with the puppies. I spoke with many breeders for advice on when to let the puppies go, there was a lot of different opinions on that issue.. Everyone believes differently. Thank you for the advice so far and I will plan to let the mother handle the weaning of the puppy that will be staying. :) |
Just wanted to say :welcome4: and thank you for adopting the mother and taking on the responsibility of her and her pups from your friend. Not many would have done the same. I'm not a breeder but there are plenty on this forum that can give you helpful advice. I'd love to see pics of mama and pup when you get the chance. |
I'm definitely not a breeder so that's why I am not knowledgeable of certain things but I have been a dog owner for many years and have seen many many breeders let their pups go to homes at 8weeks or so. I believe it's a matter of opinion and have seen many well rounded healthy adult dogs that left their nest at that age. |
Thank you Colesmommy :) |

I wasn't planning to neuter the boy until my vet says it is safe, As I would obviously need his expert opinion on that matter before its done I'm sure ;) thanks again everyone for all the replies! |
