Bright pink/red bump or cyst about size of lady-bug My 11-year old Yorkie suddenly got a bump under his front armpit. When I first noticed it, it was about the size of a short-grain of rice, but in the last 3 months, it has grown about three times that size. Now, it's more round and appears to be slightly larger than a lady bug. The bump is a very bright pinkish/red. It is smooth, almost translucent on the outside, looks somewhat like a blister, and appears to be filled with water. It could be solid, but I'm not able to determine that with any certainty. It does not seem to cause him any pain whatsoever -- there is zero reaction when I touch or manipulate the bump. I see lots of posts here about strange bumps, but I did not see one that had similar characteristics. Has anyone dealt with this before? When the bump was the size of a rice grain, I showed the vet, who said to just monitor it for growth. I have a call into the vet now to see whether it should be removed. I hope it's not so large that it cannot be removed without general anesthesia. |
Cali has a growth by her ear that is more wart like. Her vet did a needle aspiration right at the office and said is was a plasma cell cyst and didn't need to come off. Then just recently she had a black growth on her lip and the vet said it had to be removed. It ended up being benign. Hopefully, your vet can check it out further and not have to do surgery. |
Is your baby microchip???? Mine migrated down to his armpit, the vet said it shouldn't cause any problems, but I check on it everyday to make sure that its still there and not getting swollen or causing him problems. I would get him checked by a vet to make sure. |
Uni has had several bumps removed and biopsied, and thankfully they were all nothing. She had one on her foot that started small, then got big and turned black, then eventually fell off! But they elected not for surgical removal bc there wasn't much skin there to stitch it back up. She had another on her thigh, that the vet removed in the office with a sharp pokey thing. That turned out to be a follicular cyst. It was deep in the skin and quite imbedded. She had another on her elbow that was small and grew large, and then fell off. Really those things can be anything. I say get them to do a needle aspiration in the office, no anesthesia, have them send the cells off to a lab and find out what it is. If it's nothing, then don't worry. Yes it will cost about $100 to find out it could be nothing at all, but IMO it's worth the piece of mind. I've done it I think three or four times now. |
You say the bump is in the armpit ? is there a possibility that it's being rubbed there by a harness ? Also if it needs to be removed, you could do a Dental at the same time if needed. I'll be praying that it's nothing serious. |
Update ? |
My first thought also was a microchip. Have the vet examine it, biopsy if necessary. Hope to hear all is well in an update. |
Armaneo is not micro-chipped. After further research, I concluded that it is a histiocytoma, which I understand is a rather common occurrence with older dogs. Our vet told us to continue to monitor it, but advised against surgery as he would have to be under general anesthesia for its removal. Her recommendation was based, in part, on the fact that the bump is not causing any noticeable pain or discomfort. However, if it grows rapidly, we may need to revisit the issue. Thanks everyone for the comments and thoughts. |
My pups just started getting these types of bumps about 3 yrs ago. Here is a site with different types for you to look over. Some are just cysts but others need further looking into and maybe even biopsied. Lumps and Bumps - Common types, what to watch for, and how to monitor lumps and bumps in pets |
