Not a happy camper I am dogsitting my friends 100lb boxer, pit bull mix and Brandi who is all of 5lbs is not a happy camper I have been alternating putting them in their crates because as sweet and gentle as my friend's dog is, she is not used to being around Brandi. So I have been putting Laila (my friends dog) in her crate for a few hours and letting Brandi roam free, then I switch. Well Brandi hasn't been in her crate in years and she is not happy. However, I want Big Sexy (my friend's nickname for her dog) to roam freely as well. I don't want her cooped up in the crate the entire time she is here. So I figure this is the best solution. My friend was in a bind and it's just for two nights so I said no problem. Now my cat I don't have to worry about, she hasn't been downstairs all day. She is keeping her distance. Big sexy has hip dysplsia so she has a hrad time getting up and down stairs. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's a pic of big sexy (i love this nickname and when you see her pic you'll know why we call her that. |
1 Attachment(s) To give you an idea of how massive she is, here's a pic of her sleeping and she has the nerve to be snoring. |
Wow, that's one big dog! Are you sure the tongue sticking out is because she's sexy, or is she thinking about eating you? I think you are handling this in a great way! Even though Big Sexy is gentle, sometimes Yorkies can instigate the fight, they can be real brats at times. |

Wow! You are so much nicer then I am. I would have never agreed to that. I would have politely said no and nicely got her a list of doggy day care places. I'm sooo not a big dog person . |

Laila is a gentle giant and is the most behave dog I've ever met. But even with her gentle personality, I am taking extra precautions. If I thought for one second that Brandi would be in any danger, I would of said no without a second thought. |
Big Sexy is so cute! Alot of people wouldn't take in a dog that size even for a day! I bet your friend is real appreciative  |
You are doing exactly the right thing. Just a note, that even with big dog to big dog, if I rescue a BRT pup young adult it is crate and rotate, until I see how the new dog is going to fit in. Sometimes it is crate and rotate, for the whole time the dog is here. |
okay, how do you get 100lb dog in her crate? It is time to rotate but Laila is not having it. When I tell her to go get her crate, she lays flat on the floor giving me this sad look. If this was Brandi I was just pick her up and gently put her in her crate. I was walking Laila and it was really funny how people were pulling their dogs closer to them and crossing the street. it was like watching the red sea split. Of course Brandi doesn't have this effect. Not feeling threatened by Brandi at all. Oh and get this. My friend who has a yorkie wants me to dog sit her dog beginning on Sunday.....lawdy. Fortunately Lailah will be gone and I will be watching my friend's yorkie until Thursday. Now Scooter is actually Brandi's boyfriend....well he would be if he knew what to do with girls.:p Scooter is the same size as Brandi and they are the best of friends. I've watched Scooter many times before and he is more interested playing with his ball then Brandi. |
Do two things. Open the crate door, and say firmly Crate! If that does not work, treat her there. And by this I mean call Come, you are standing beside the crate with treat. Treat her for a good come, and then say Crate, and treat her when she goes in. I do hope you have a crate pad for her. Dogs with hip and or elbow dysplasia should really lay on cushioned surfaces. |
