Destructive behavior..... Hi guys! We have had little Molly now for about 6-weeks. She is a normal puppy with the chewing and biting but today my husband came in from work(he gets in before I do)only to find a huge mess. Molly took her pee pad and shredded it all over her room. She also dug and chewed on a small rug that I had under her crate. It was so bad that my hubby had to cut the string from the rug. She has never done this before and I don't understand why today was different. Is this something I am going to see from here on out? I removed the rug and a couple other things I thought she might destroy. I also put her pee pads in the wiz dog pad holders. I hadn't been using those because I didn't want to upset her training. She used them fine tonight but I guess I'm worried about tomorrow while we are at work. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Thanks!!! |
I don't know how old she is but.. If she's still pretty young, my best guess is that she's teething. And if that's the case, yes. You will be seeing more "destructive" behavior till her adult teeth sets in. Perhaps you should contain her to an area where she can't cause damage. Like, put her in a playpen with some toys she can chew on along with some clothing item that has your scent? Magnus used to shred his pads too but he grew out of that after few months. I think it was partly b/c of his teething. That and he might've just been bored. |
Yep, teething makes them go nuts. I have Cookie's chew toys littered all around the living room and kitchen (only places she is allowed until she's potty trained) so I can always have something close by to give her (and then praise when she chews it) when she is in 'monkey swinging from the trees' mode and chews something she shouldn't. |
Does she have lots of chew toys to chew on? |
She does have lots of chew toys that I leave with her. Her space is very confined while we are at work. We leave her in our spare bedroom (which is hers now). Everything in there is hers. Her crate, her toys, food and water bowls and her per pads. She there for the duration of our work day and she sleeps in there at night. When we are home she's out with us to play. I can keep my eye on her and make sure she doesn't get into anything she shouldn't. Her bedroom has been puppy proofed and I was just shocked that she shredded the pee pad yesterday. She had never done that so it concerned me a bit. I hear about separation anxiety and was hoping it wasn't that. She's been with us long enough to know our routine but maybe it's starting to bother her. I really hope it was an isolated incident. Thanks guys for responding. |
I actually had to switch Billi from pads to the potty patch because for whatever reason, she sees a pad and wants to shred it- even when it's in the pad holder thingie. It really sounds like pretty typical puppy behavior to me. Puppies just like to shred stuff. Part of it is teething, part of it is playful/innocent. I've found that giving Billi random papers & lil boxes from time to time keeps her shredding "contained," as in she doesn't go around shredding stuff. Molly isn't trying to be destructive, she's just a growing puppy. Consider her a toddler at this point- she'll grow out of it. |
