When you have more than one When you have more than one person in the house caring for your dogs it is most important to communicate!!! Last night I gave Skittles his pimobendan (heart med),my DD came home 2hrs later and gave it to him again. I stepped into the kitchen just as he swallowed it!! So at 1:30am I made her call the EC (me standing right there). The vet oncall said that the dose was very low and that he would PROBABLY be ok. We could call the poison control hotline if we wished. I told her she would be paying for this,I was on hold for 20min. Well h@!! if the dog was going to have a problem it would of been in the first 30 or so min. Hung up,called the EC back to ask a few more questions. I was up until 4am she went to bed at 5am,he sleeps on her bed. We listened to his heart, stethascope, about every 20min to track it. My fear was his bloodpressure falling to low or being to high. It took everything I had to NOT chew her out the entire time I was awake. Got up at 7:30 to check on him. Called the vet to see if we should skip this morning meds, yep. So Skittles will have a very quiet day in the pen or right next to me. New rule at my house: look Mom in the eye and ASK,dont assume anything. Oh, and I see a nap in my future today. No more excitement please. |
Great reminder. Another suggestion would be to purchase an inexpensive weekly medication holder so yo can see if today's medications have been given or not. Most grocery stores sell them for about a buck. Another thing we used to do in the olden days of nursing was affix a blank sticker to a bottle and when we took something out, we would write the date on it. |

Great reminder to communicate. I'm glad your little one is okay, and I can imagine the stress this caused you. Our biggest concern here is a double feeding, which pales by comparison. When Max had eye meds, I had to keep a notepad on the counter. Putting the drops in became so redundant that I couldn't remember if I had done it or not. |
Great Ideas: I also have put out the daily meds (if in pill form) on the counter. For heartworm we highlight our kitchen calendar with the date we are to give the next dose. That works well, and we tick it off once administered. And LOL @ Kristin. We have double fed a few times. ONce was my fault, they acted so hungry when I came into the kitchen, one of the few times I slept in, and hubby had already fed them, but I fed them again, and they all gobbled up their food as if they were starving:D:D I feed in the mornings, and hubby at night. So..... |

With my pride and Galen it is hard to keep everything straight. I have sticker for frontline and heart worm I put on calendar when I do it |
That's scary, I am glad you now have a system worked out for anything for the future. |
