training pads do people use training pads because they dont have a back garden, sorry a bit of a rookie.buddy just goes to the back door when he needs to go |
People use them for a variety of reasons. Some because of what you said. Others because they work long hours and can't take them out regularly. Some use them because they don't want to take the puppies outside before all their vaccinations are complete. Bad weather, aggressive neighbor dogs or convenience are other reasons. And then some of us have spoiled little princesses who don't like the feel of grass beneath their feet (my Scarlett ;). ) |
I've had several dogs and never even considered using potty pads until Lexi. Now, I wouldn't have it any other way. I like them mainly because she's home alone about 8 hours while I'm at work. Even though I know she can hold it, I don't want her to. I would be SO uncomfortable if I couldn't go to the bathroom until I returned home from work. So why would I expect her to do something that I'd never even consider doing myself? And, if something happens and I couldn't get home when I expected, I don't want her to feel bad if she can't hold it any longer and has to go somewhere in the house. She's such a good girl and it would be totally my fault, but I know she'd feel sooo guilty.:( This way, she can use her pad and bounce away with a smile. |
thanks for all the info especially rhetts mama who has replyed to all my threads |
I use the puppy pads because of the area I live in. We do have coyotes, that are known to prey upon the small breeds, even with a human present. We also have prey birds, that I have personally witnessed swope down and steal a 6month old kitten from the pasture. Only when my Aussie is present and I am out, do I let them outdoors. |
I use the puppy pads with Jasper because I am disabled with a lot of chronic pain. It is hard to go up and down our front porch steps. Plus he is so small, I worry that a hawk or other animal could get to him before I could. I have 2 other furbabies that I trained to go outside before I had health issues. They still go outside and have never even thought to use the pads we have out for Jasper. |
I have trained many dogs over my lifetime and never used potty pads until I had Gracie. I was recovering from a back injury and she was so tiny and had to pee so frequently. The pads were a great help for me. As long as I kept a potty pad near by we had no accidents. As an adult she potties outside but I do keep pads for when we are away or bad weather. I think they are really really wonderful aids for housebreaking small dogs, especially for those who are not home much of the time. |
Using the Pads My guys go outside 99% of the time. We have large fenced in yard and they love to run. However, we live in NJ and when it's snowing, or raining really hard they won't step off the porch. They don't want to go outside. (who could blame them) In those cases they will go to the pads. We keep them in the same spot and no matter where they are in the house they will go on the pads. I have been very lucky. I will tell you we had to be very diligent and watch them. Every 2 hours take them out or when they change what they are doing take them out. For example if they are sleeping on the couch when they wake up take them out, if they are chewing on a toy or bone and they stop take them out, etc. It helps that I work from home and my wife is also home so they get allot of attention. BUT they DO LEARN! |
I use pads for those times in between outside. Sophie Kate does not tell me when she has to go so we are on a strict schedule but sometimes she has to go outside of the schedule so that is when the pad is used. Also they are a lifesaver during bad weather, if the pad is down and she has to relief herself she will use it. |

I trained mine from day one to use litter boxes with pads...I love it, no fuss no muss. Mia2 does like to run to the basement and poop on the one in the corner though! They will go outside if I take them outside but their primary potty means! |
I will use them because I live in an area in Texas that has ALOT of vultures, snakes, etc. I let my bulldog outside to use the bathroom(my yard is fenced btw :)) but I really don't have to worry about her being carried off by a bird of prey when she's 50 + lbs. My yorkie puppy whose coming next week however and will only weigh 2 lbs at the most is another story. My breeder has told me stories of one of her clients yorkies being carried off by a bird when she was in the backyard with them. I'd rather be safe than sorry. |
Our dogs used to eat them and tear them bits. Now they are all fully trained outdoors and we've been using the potty pads to line the cages of our guinea pig cages. As strange at it seems they've been coming in very handy. |

I use washable puppy pads. When I got him, he was too little to take outside, and didn't have all his shots yet. Also, I didn't take him out because he will NOT potty on the grass. Why, I don't know. :) But, I don't mind since it is very convenient and I have 3 young children to take care of also. And he is only 5 months old and all I have to say is "go potty" and he runs over to his pad and goes pee. He goes poo all on his own. :) |
I use washable pads (meant for humans) to line the bottom of Toby's pen. He hasn't wet in there in ages, but he does know that if he *really* has to go and we aren't home, that is an okay spot for him to go. He goes outside 99.9% of the time though. |
