Loose Permanent Teeth Our 10-1/2 year old female Yorkie, Muffie has a loose PERMANENT tooth in the upper front. Anyone know what could be the cause? Is this unusual? What do we do if we find more that are loose? Is it normal for older Yorkies to loose their permanent teeth? I just wonder if it could have happened when she and Missy (Yorkie puppy) were playing wildly and muzzling each other??? |
My almost 9 year old pom had 3 loose fron teeth on the bottom and I had them pulle about a month ago as well as one molar she is fine. Eats and chews her bones like normal. Small dogs do tend to have teeth problems. |
Hey Speedy! Wow, that was most definitely the fastest reply I've seen so far! Yours has lost a few then. We've never had any dogs in the past with loose teeth. We'll have to keep an eye out then. |

I had a friend years ago - whose son lost one of his permanent teeth on the playground. She picked it up, washed it off, and put it back in his mouth. She had him be very very very careful with it for a while - and it reattached itself. That was a long time ago - and now dentists often replace teeth knowing that they will reattach. (The root actually develops new bone growth in this process.) Knowing this to be the case with people - (and your dog's tooth hasn't come out) -- I would advise leaving it alone and keeping your dog from being rough with it for as long as possible. No chew toys, feed only soft food, liquids, etc. The loose tooth may reattach itself and he'll not have to lose it. I know it's hard to keep a dog from chewing - but do the best you can. Carol Jean |
My 12 years old Schnauzer had this happen to her a lot over her years. You may want to take your baby into the vet and make sure everything is ok and none of the teeth are infected. Not to scare you or anything, but an infected tooth left too long can put poison in the dogs blood stream OR she might just have a loose tooth :) |

My neighbor has a 14 year old Yorkie with NO TEETH. She rescued him from Yorkie Rescue. He eats wet food and is in great shape. I would say that with age, losing teeth may be quite normal. |

Thanks everyone. I've heard of "kibble" but really don't know what it is. With no teeth, couldn't you soak the Chicken Soup dry in water till soft? Let's hope and pray it doesn't come to that. |
Maya, my pom looks so funny because they removed three of her bottom teeth and left just the one! And she is a dog who pants all the time so her mouth is always open! Also, the vet gave me a gel to put on it's called OraVet and it is a plaque prvention gel to put on every week. One problem is that my pom is a snapper and I can't get near her teeth! They said i could use it on the puppy as well. |
Sorry, kibble is dry dog food and you may or may not have to soften his food as again many Yorkies never chew their hard food. This is nothing to get upset about and many, many, many Yorkies go through this. There was not one Yorkie that came through our rescue that didn't either lose some teeth or had gum disease. My gang has to go in yearly for teeth cleaning. |
teeth It is very normal for older Yorkies to lose adult teeth..especially the smaller ones. It is best to have a dental check each year and have the loose ones removed..they can only cause worse problems if left alone. It leads to gum problems..but even worse is the heart problems from bacteria..ask the vet to explain. Yorkies do wonderfully with missing teeth. Most do not lose the molars and canines until very late in life or ever..but since the average life span of a toy is 12 yrs..you can expect some tooth lose by 8 or 9..best wishes |
Glad to hear you were able to get a appointment for Muffie. Princess will be three in March, I have her teeth checked out every 6 months. I heard small breeds have teeth problems, our Vet told us if they are cleaned everyday and checked twice a year it helps when they are older. Please keep us posted! :) YT hugs to Muffie :D |
I've learned so much on YT in the last month. We didn't know 3/4 of this with our older Yorkie, Muffie. We just winged it not realizing how susceptible they are to certain things. I appreciate all the replies. We'll find out on Saturday morning when we take her to the vet. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! |

My Shih Tzu will be 15 years old this summer and she had to have 18 pulled almost 2 years ago. No matter what I did for her she just had really bad teeth. She is still able to eat dry food though and is healthy other than old age just creeping up on her. So you may just need to schedule an appt to have them pulled. Good Luck and keep us posted. |

The trainer told us that Muffie could possibly live up to 18 years. Is that true for Yorkies? |

Pat, I just had visions of many of the older Yorkies we have seen over the years who has canines only. They helped hold the tongue in the mouth..Yorkies are so prone to tooth and gum disease. Now tell me, why is it that the dog that has the worst dental problem is also the dog that can turn themselves inside out to keep mom from brushing their teeth. Where is the justice in that, I ask you. |

life span The cold hard fact is..the average life span of a Yorkie is 12 to 13 yrs. Many live alot longer, but many do not..and it kills me each time one dies. My oldest lived to 17, many diedat 13 to 14 yrs..but I have lost many at 10 to 12 yrs. |
