OH NO!!! Crate rest for 2 weeks
 

:eek: Macy has been ordered crate rest for 2 weeks. She has never been confined to a crate and it's miserable for her and me. She feels like she is being punished for something.

Does anyone have any tips on what I can do to make this easier on both of us?

To me, crate rest, means calm and quiet. You can try to take some time during the day to just hold her for awhile, cuddle her and let her know she did nothing wrong. Crate rest is super hard, Fletch had to do it for 3 days after his neuter.... I couldn't imagine it longer than that though! What happened to Macy?

She has LP in both knees and the orthopedist is trying anti inflamatory medicine and complete crate rest for 2 weeks to see if this helps. Doctor thinks she may have some inflamation in one knee that is making her limp.

I just sit and hold mine on crate rest a good portion of the day. But a smart dog will soon begin to accept the crate as the new reality after about 3 days and do seem to settle into it much better than I think I would. And then you have to learn how to keep them quiet without jumping around when the doorbell rings, etc., and that is why I like to actually have hands on mine most of the time so you can catch them and keep them still when triggers occur such as the garbage truck coming down the alley, cats meowing outside the window, doorbells, etc. Putting a dog in a heavy coat, service vest, Thundershirt or sweater can sometimes have a dampening effect on some dog's enthusiasm so if you turn your AC down if you live in a hot climate, that sort of thing can keep some of them from being quite so wild. Just moving the crate over by where you are sitting or putting your dog in a hardshell airline carrier for a while can keep them quiet,too.

Be sure she doesn't jump or go up doggie steps that involve any jumping when she's out of the crate. Sometimes you have to remove the ramps and steps and put large cardboard boxes in front of the edge of the bed/couch so the dog can't approach it to try to jump up.

I hope Macy is feeling better and back to her regular life soon.

My Cookie had surgery and has been on crate rest since June 19. She is in a stroller except when I go out and then in a crate. It is working well. I just take her from room to room with me...she is actually loving it. :D

Love that stroller idea. Can yo tell me what brand/model you are using so I can see it? No doubt the time will come when Tibbe will have to be crate confined and I think that would go far easier for him. He'd prefer to be in the same room at all times and the stroller may be easier than carrying the airline carrier around.

I buy the cheap ones on Ebay. I have used them for many years. Here is a pic of Cookie sleeping on her back in one of them...I think she is liking this almost too much. haha

Lady Jane you are one smart cookie. Dug out Macy's stroller and she is sitting beside me as happy as can be. I had to sweep my floors this morning and pushed her with one hand and the Swifter in the other hand.

Unfortunately we have had vacation planned for next week so she will have to spend the rest of her crate time at the place I board her. I think she is getting more used to the idea she can't out and run around.

When Pixie was on 6 weeks crate rest after her LP surgery I kept her on my bed with me most of the time. She can't get up and down without a ramp so it was easy to keep her there. I also bought a small animal (rabbit etc) ex pen and moved it from room to room so she could be near me. Pixie was not a puppy though and not a high energy dog. I like the stroller idea as well. Good luck.

Great!! Glad you had one and that she likes it! If my Cookie can stay still in a stroller, any pup can. She is a wild one! :D

I'm glad the stroller is working. Poor little thing. Hopefully she will make a full and quick recovery.

When Callie was on 8 weeks of crate rest from her LP surgery I used a baby play pen and put it in the room we spend all our time in. I liked that better then a crate because you can reach in and pet or just see them better to check on them. I also will steal what Linda is doing with Cookie if Callie has to have her other knee done at some point.

Bless you for that link! BTW, those pictures of Cookie and the others are just too sweet. They look perfectly contented - well as contented as a Yorkie can ever be when not romping and stomping around!

LadyJane, great idea about the stroller. Hope I remember that in case one of my 4 ever need a resting period.

It seems more like pampering instead of punishment, which is what you want when they are injured.

We too have always used a stroller for crate rest or even spays! It's a real life saver.

I have seen people post it...and I have even suggested it; but never had I tried it until now. And, this is my wildest pup! I would never have believed it....anyone who knows Cookie is as shocked as I am. I am sorry I never did this with previous surgeries but will in the future if I ever get another (hoping not to have any surgeries any time soon :D )
