What IS Aflatoxin? A Bacteria? Poison? :( Francie |
Aflatoxin is a potent carcinogen. The fungus (genus Aspergillus) that secretes aflatoxin enters the plant, usually, through the wounds left by an insect pest, since most plants have a hard outer layer that acts as a barrier to fungi. Once inside the plant, the fungus can reach all parts of the plant, including its seeds. Our grain supply is routinely screened to detect and eliminate aflatoxin, but it is a serious cause of illness and death in developing countries which have fewer food safety regulations. Some plant scientists are trying to develop transgenic corn with a gene for an enzyme which breaks down aflatoxin. http://members.tripod.com/c_rader0/aflatox.htm Notice that they say it is routinely screened here! Ha-ha! Also, they say it is a serious cause of illness and death in DEVELOPING countries! I suppose we are now down to the point of being a developing country. |
How awful about the dogs that lost their lives!! Very sad! Good luck with your big breeding decision! |
I have to agree if he is pet or breeding quality that would help me make my decision. I will add to this and the marking.. Belly bands could be used and that helps out a lot. I hope I am not the only breeder here on YT that has experienced that FEMALES will mark as well, this is NOT just a male thing... :D |
Welcome Hooper. It is always very sad to hear of losses of our furkids. I cannot give you any advice. I think that you and your wifey need to talk, but before you make a decision, have a knowledgeable unbiased person evaluate Dewey as to his qualifications as a breeding prospect. Not all stud dogs mark -- although it is a natural thing for them to do, with persistence and perserverance than can be taught that marking inside is a huge NO-NO. A lot is up to you, whether or not you have the patience and consistency to head off mistakes BEFORE they happen and correct each and every booboo. Belly bands can also be a very effective training aid. Many stud dogs get a bad rap because their humans don't take the time and effort (and it can be considerable) to assume ultimate head of the pack position and teach them that marking is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. By the way, we are neighbors..... are you from Jasper, GA too? I live in Rome and have "horse friends" in Jasper. GOOD LUCK!!! :teethysmi |
Hi, I got my Pebbles from a breeder name Ed in Jasper. She was born on 6/20/05. I'm wondering if she and Dewey are litter mates. |
Hey Folks, I know this is really awful, but in fairness to the manufacturer of Diamond Dog foods, I have to say that I used to feed my large breed dogs this food for a long time and never had a problem. The only reason I quit feeding it was because it was not readily available in my area. I'm still really sorry though Hooper, it is tragic that the breeder do not know of the recall and that his dogs didn't make it...good luck to you. |
