New Yorkie Mommy with question on Worms Hi there. I'm a new yorkie mom to Milo. He's 7 weeks old and so tiny. We took him to the vet today and he only weighs 9oz. According to growth charts that's normal depending on his birth weight, but I have NO idea what that was. I had him dewormed BUT I suspect he has a tapeworm. The vet said he was to young to have the tapeworm dewormer but they didn't tell me how old he can be to have it. I don't want to go to long before getting it. I also suspect his home before me had fleas but we do not. I bought a flea comb and have combed and combed but found nothing. Any advice? I'd love any advice you can give this new yorkie mom :) |
Welcome to YT!! 9oz is really tiny and 7weeks is very young. Baby should of stayed with mommie until 12weeks. It is VERY important that you keep your baby warm. Use potty pads to keep him from getting exposed to anything outside. Even in your own yard there are dangers, hawks for one. It is also important to feed your baby several meals a day,use the food that the breeder used for a while. Their tiny tummys can get upset very easially, you can always change food later when pup is older. There is a ton of information here in the library on new pups and hypoglycemia the dangers and signs, this is something that can happen very easially to a pup under 3lbs. As for your question about tapeworms. It is best to call your vet back and ask them. It may depend more on weight than age for such a tiny one. Be very careful using hartworm med, giving immunization shots all at once or spot on flea protection. |
Thank you! Yes. I do think he should have stayed with Mommy longer. We were told he was 10-11 weeks but when we got home I took a closer look at his papers and his birthday shows him to be 7 weeks. We aren't taking him outside and he is doing amazing with the piddle pads. We are using the food that the women gave us when we got him and just giving him open access to food as I read up on hypoglycemia and am SUPER paranoid about it. The vet didn't mention an exact weight for the tapeworm deworming but did mention that he had to be about 4lbs to do the flea treatment. I will call back tomorrow and ask about age for the deworming. Thank you again =D Quote:
