How will my Yorkipoo let me know he wants to go outside Hi I have a 9 week old yorkipoo I have had him for 6 days. He has been really good using training wee pads during day when I have just popped to shops and at night. We keep him in the kitchen where his food, bed is and training pad in front of the back door obviously once he is trained he will have access to the whole house. During day I take him outside every half hour or so I carry him to a certain area in the garden and say wee wee's and poo poo's he has been really good I have been using the clicker and giving him treats when he goes. I just want to ask a couple of questions when will I be able to remove the training pad? Will he be able to soon hold it throughout the night and when I pop out to the shops? Also when I'm home how will he let me know when he is older that he wants to go outside to toilet? I don't want to use a bell on the door I would prefer it if he tapped at the door or barked. Thanks Tracy |
Maggie just stops what she is doing and goes and sits near the door and looks at us. This is usually when we are watching TV at night. During the day she usually gets her walk so doesn't really need to go out. If we aren't in the room or don't see her or ignore her she will eventually "knock" (tap) and if we really aren't paying attention she will whine. Every half hour is probably too much. Try every 2 hours or so, and 15 minutes after playtime, food time or right after a nap. Rewards is a good idea. |
We got our yorkiepoo bells we hang on door she jiggles them when she needs to go out. We are now working on getting her to go on potty pad in house. Horrible coyote problem here. Have had 3 in rear yard in last month. |
Right now you are dealing with a baby. He has not yet developed the ability to hold back urine and stool. Usually sometime after the 16th week that starts to happen. With small breed dogs it can take a little longer than with larger pups. They have such small bladders. It takes a lot of repetition to teach a little pup what is expected. Just because they do it right a few times does not mean they have it all figured out. It will take several months of of constant training to get him to be consistent with his potty habits. Even if he seems to be doing well do not let off on your training. Many pups have relapses in their training when an owner slacks off. |

But I'm wondering how people get the ball rolling on having their pup start signaling when she wants to go out. The only time she whines is in the middle of the night in her crate when she has to go (usually only needed once or twice a week; she is 18 weeks now). |
We have blinds at the door and when Magnus started touching the blinds, I'd open the door. I think around 2 weeks, this went on and I think he understood that if he does that, he can go outside. If I'm not paying attention, he'll look at me to see if I'm looking back. If I'm still not paying attention, he'll come and bark at me, then go back to the door and touch it again. Have you thought about a doggie door? Or is that not an option for you? I'd like to have one but the way my door is, I can't install one... |
