We were picking names before Luma was even born, and I knew I wanted a girl. I have a Facebook status where I was throwing around names and everyone said they liked Remi, but I decided on Bijou. Super girly name for a girly mom and girly dog. But DBF didn't like it!! He wanted it to be a name that reflected both of us, not just me since she was our first dog as adults and as a couple. He's big into videogames so I made a hugeee, HUGE list of female videogame names and I disliked all of them. Then one night it popped into y head and as soon as I thought of it, I knew it was the right name. Luma is the name of a baby star in the Super Mario Galaxy game. Fits her perfect because she is my baby and she is the epitome of the color yellow, bright, friendly, happy. :) Its really annoying when people call her Luna though haha. As for Rosie....I was totally stumped. I thought I was going to get a boy puppy for the longest time and decided on the name Keaton, but then I wanted a girl again...more fun....couldn't think of a name for her!! In the YT chat I was throwing around namesand came up with Marina/Marin, but finally picked Rosie. I know I picked the right name because a week later my grandmother Rosie passed away and we brought our pup home a few days later. She really helped me during that time. My little Rosie means so much to me and I happily think of my gma every single time I say her name! I call her Ro, Rosie Posie, and Rosita! |
And about a list of names, I have totally had one even when I was waaay too young to think about baby names LOL but I've always wanted to be a mommy so one day I will have my names good and ready :) At some point I decided I wanted to name my baby Alaska. Don't ask. I do kinda still like it though, but being a true southern girl I like my names classy and sophisticated and well, southern. My daughters will be Caroline (middle name TBA) Sher, Charlotte (middle name TBA) Sher, Son will be Noah Shaul Sher. :) LOL I have a problem. |

This is such a cute thread! I love hearing how everyone's pups' name came to be. There are a lot of rehomes! More than I realized. Well bf named Uni. I had no idea what to name her, and he came up with Uni bc I love to eat uni the sushi (sea urchin), and of course the name had to be either food or alcohol! I saw another Uni dog from Japan on Youtube, and his/her dog companion is Toro (fatty tuna). I love that (if we ever get another one we need to name, that was on the list), but I hear that you shouldn't get a dog name that sounds too much like "no". Makes sense. Then I thought of Unagi (freshwater eel), but I tend to like dog names with just two syllables. But Uni fits her well, it's unique and she did look like a little black spiky ball when we first got her. But people (usually old people) can't say it, and will call her Winnie, Weenie, Looney, Booney, Goonie, pretty much everything other than "oo-nee". Then usually I will spell it out U-N-I, and then they say, Oh! You-nee! I had to name Scrappy, bc he didn't have a name, since he was picked up a street dog. He was just SO tiny when I got him, but he survived being on the streets AND seemed like he had a respiratory infection when I got him, but he was strong. So at first I named him Scraps after the bone dog in Corpse Bride, but the eventually changed to Scrappy, after his personality came out and he was more like Scrappy Doo. Actually he was EXACTLY like Scrappy Doo. But for some reason I ended up giving him this ridiculous long "formal" name. Sometimes I liked to pretend he was this old British man, all uppity and rich, so he became Lord Scrappington Montgomery McLimpybottom. He walked with a bad limp in case you were wondering about that. No idea where I got the Montgomery from. Quote:

Hubby is a car buff and had a hot rod car; he named Hot Rod. We were thinking of names and Hot Rod just start zooming around the living room at 90 miles an hour. haha, so there came his name. Maggie May's name started with something along the car theme...mag wheels, so it became Maggie. I immediately thought of the Rod Stewart song, Maggie May. Even though I have nick names that I use for them, I can't imagine any other names for them. Love reading about how names came to be. |
When we first picked Sophie up her name was Charlotte - I loved the name and was planning to call her Charlie for short, but I had always planned on getting a female yorkie and naming her Lexie...but she didn't really suit either of those names and within an hour of picking her up, I wasn't happy. Her early vet records are actually in the name Abby and she was 'Abby' for a bit but I still kept thinking of new names because Abby wasn't sticking...I randomly thought of the name Sophie, she looked at me and the name has remained :) Of course now she is usually called Pumpkin, Peanut or Stink Bug...but I love her name and can't imagine calling her anything other than Sophie. Besides, my husband and I now have a black lab named Abby. We picked her up, said we liked the name Abby and it has never been anything else! |
