Anyone else keep a list of names? I kind of have a problem lol. I have a list of names in my phone, I always jot it down after I hear one that I like, etc, and hopefully one of them ends up being my next dogs name lol. I am fairly certain I know what nextdog will be, but of course things often can change!

maggiefromnj 07-29-2013 11:57 AM

My son picked Maggie. Since none of us a had a strong opinion we went with MAggie. I wish she was named princess because I always call her that and she thinks she is one!

Verbena 07-29-2013 12:24 PM

Galen was almost Dillinger. I thought he was so little give him something a little cuter. Well he is also known as Buggie the Moppet lol my DBF has a voice and everything lol

spiritwings1202 07-29-2013 01:16 PM

Pixie was perfect for her it was my first choice. I thought of tinkerbell but I didn't want to end up calling her tinkers for short. lol

Cricket was always cricket. I had had a yorkie named Daisy that lived a short time and I thought about just keeping the name Daisy for the new puppy but everyone kept telling me I should change it. I actually came across the name Cricket scrolling through the list of girl's names from this website! Lol! :) I just can't help myself I have to share a recent picture of her!

Jess was called "fancy" when we got her. there was no way we were calling her that so the girls decided on Jessica Emma. Jessie for short or Jess for even shorter or Deddie (because my nephew cant pronounce his j and 's

My lil friend 07-29-2013 01:37 PM

She was Mina from the start. Even the breeder started calling her Mina the last 4 or 5 days that she was there. She knew her name when I went to pick her up.
"Kings Minny Mina" means Royal-tiny-strong willed warrior.....it fits

Lap Princess 07-29-2013 01:58 PM

Lexie was Jaynee, pronounced "jin-NEE" & no way in heck was I keeping that name. Lexie just fits her to a tee, even though it's kinda common, I don't care.

I like the names that aren't normally dog names, I've never heard another dog named Joel:p but I was also thinking about Chad or Zac but he looks way more like a Joel:D

HerculesMama 07-29-2013 05:32 PM

We named our boy Hercules. My husband wasn't too keen on getting a small dog, and would rather have had a German shepherd. He said if we got a little dog, he had to have a big dog name. He made a list, and the boys and I decided on one. His name fits him perfectly, and we get lots of laughs when we are out and people ask his name.

I think picking puppy names is almost as hard as picking our children's names. Can you imagine being out in public and calling your pup to you and getting strange looks from people . . . lol

Pookie1w 07-29-2013 05:43 PM

Coco Chanel came with the name and, since I wear Chanel perfume, it suited her.

As for our new baby Sully who'll be with us soon, the name game continues. With his dark and mysterious good looks, he needs an exotic name. So far the contenders are Rico Suave, Ricardo, Javier, Alejandro. Feel free to vote on one of the names above or suggest a new one!

My aunt has had two dogs named Max now though, and there was another Max in the family too, so it's kind of too used up in our fam for me to ever use it lol. I love that your guy is Maximo though, that's different!

So many people can't believe that I gave a little hairball such a common, un-cutesy name. Then they meet him up close and they say, "He is a Max!" lol

Tonight in the car, the boys were playing their usual barking game and I remembered the other name that we should have him: "Alvin!!!!!" from the Chipmunks. :D

Bayleigh was Angel when her previous owner surrendered her to the shelter. But I was taking her home to foster and my cat is named Angel and my director pressured me to come up with a new name quickly so I blurted out Gremlin.

I love the name and she does look like a gremlin. No one else liked it but she was my foster so I named her. Little did I know that three days later I was going to make it official and keep her.

Like I said, no one else liked the name Gremlin so I changed it to Bayleigh. Not sure why I chose that name other than I like it. I usually put a lot more thought into a name. For the longest time I was torn between spelling it normal Bailey or weird Bayleigh. We see which one won out.

I really wish I would have kept the name Gremlin. She's my dog but I let the others talk me out of it. Guess it sounds to boyish. Oh well... Poor thing doesn't even have any nicknames. She's just Bayleigh. Or on occasion, The Baby Werewolf.

I absolutely have a favorite names list. It includes both human and animal names. That said, I've only ever used one name off of it before - Pirate's. I have the next couple dogs' names picked out and they are coming off the list.

We were picking names before Luma was even born, and I knew I wanted a girl. I have a Facebook status where I was throwing around names and everyone said they liked Remi, but I decided on Bijou. Super girly name for a girly mom and girly dog. But DBF didn't like it!! He wanted it to be a name that reflected both of us, not just me since she was our first dog as adults and as a couple. He's big into videogames so I made a hugeee, HUGE list of female videogame names and I disliked all of them. Then one night it popped into y head and as soon as I thought of it, I knew it was the right name. Luma is the name of a baby star in the Super Mario Galaxy game. Fits her perfect because she is my baby and she is the epitome of the color yellow, bright, friendly, happy. :) Its really annoying when people call her Luna though haha.

As for Rosie....I was totally stumped. I thought I was going to get a boy puppy for the longest time and decided on the name Keaton, but then I wanted a girl again...more fun....couldn't think of a name for her!! In the YT chat I was throwing around namesand came up with Marina/Marin, but finally picked Rosie. I know I picked the right name because a week later my grandmother Rosie passed away and we brought our pup home a few days later. She really helped me during that time. My little Rosie means so much to me and I happily think of my gma every single time I say her name! I call her Ro, Rosie Posie, and Rosita!

Carmeow 07-30-2013 08:26 PM

And about a list of names, I have totally had one even when I was waaay too young to think about baby names LOL but I've always wanted to be a mommy so one day I will have my names good and ready :)

At some point I decided I wanted to name my baby Alaska. Don't ask. I do kinda still like it though, but being a true southern girl I like my names classy and sophisticated and well, southern.

My daughters will be Caroline (middle name TBA) Sher,
Charlotte (middle name TBA) Sher,
Son will be Noah Shaul Sher. :) LOL I have a problem.

Me too!! Kaji was Kaji even before I met him. I have a name picked out for a girl if I ever get one. She would be Auska (sounds like Oscar) just to keep with the anime theme. But since my heart is set on another boy in the near future, I should be thinking boy names. I haven't found one I like!

This is such a cute thread!

I love hearing how everyone's pups' name came to be. There are a lot of rehomes! More than I realized.

Well bf named Uni. I had no idea what to name her, and he came up with Uni bc I love to eat uni the sushi (sea urchin), and of course the name had to be either food or alcohol! I saw another Uni dog from Japan on Youtube, and his/her dog companion is Toro (fatty tuna). I love that (if we ever get another one we need to name, that was on the list), but I hear that you shouldn't get a dog name that sounds too much like "no". Makes sense. Then I thought of Unagi (freshwater eel), but I tend to like dog names with just two syllables. But Uni fits her well, it's unique and she did look like a little black spiky ball when we first got her. But people (usually old people) can't say it, and will call her Winnie, Weenie, Looney, Booney, Goonie, pretty much everything other than "oo-nee". Then usually I will spell it out U-N-I, and then they say, Oh! You-nee!

I had to name Scrappy, bc he didn't have a name, since he was picked up a street dog. He was just SO tiny when I got him, but he survived being on the streets AND seemed like he had a respiratory infection when I got him, but he was strong. So at first I named him Scraps after the bone dog in Corpse Bride, but the eventually changed to Scrappy, after his personality came out and he was more like Scrappy Doo. Actually he was EXACTLY like Scrappy Doo. But for some reason I ended up giving him this ridiculous long "formal" name. Sometimes I liked to pretend he was this old British man, all uppity and rich, so he became Lord Scrappington Montgomery McLimpybottom. He walked with a bad limp in case you were wondering about that. No idea where I got the Montgomery from.

Why don't you tell them Kaji's FULL name? LOL

Mom to Hot Rod 07-31-2013 12:04 AM

Hubby is a car buff and had a hot rod car; he named Hot Rod. We were thinking of names and Hot Rod just start zooming around the living room at 90 miles an hour. haha, so there came his name.

Maggie May's name started with something along the car theme...mag wheels, so it became Maggie. I immediately thought of the Rod Stewart song, Maggie May.

Even though I have nick names that I use for them, I can't imagine any other names for them.

Love reading about how names came to be.

danniko 07-31-2013 12:24 AM

When we first picked Sophie up her name was Charlotte - I loved the name and was planning to call her Charlie for short, but I had always planned on getting a female yorkie and naming her Lexie...but she didn't really suit either of those names and within an hour of picking her up, I wasn't happy.

Her early vet records are actually in the name Abby and she was 'Abby' for a bit but I still kept thinking of new names because Abby wasn't sticking...I randomly thought of the name Sophie, she looked at me and the name has remained :) Of course now she is usually called Pumpkin, Peanut or Stink Bug...but I love her name and can't imagine calling her anything other than Sophie. Besides, my husband and I now have a black lab named Abby. We picked her up, said we liked the name Abby and it has never been anything else!

I love Scrappy's full name!! You're so naming my second dog. And ain't nobody got time to hear Kaji's full name. Way too long and it needs a lot of explanation. :p
