What is wrong with people?! Today is the third time I literally had to grab Bentley from someone else's arms!! They come and approach him, start petting him and that's fine with me, but next thing I know they are holding him in their arms :thumbdown and I have to say "Oh he wiggles a lot, he doesnt like to be held!" And I have to grab him and put him on the floor again. Omg I am going to take deep breaths and count until 10 ... You know, before Bentley and before coming here, it never crossed my mind to hold someone else's dog or child without permission. I wouldnt even try to pet a dog I don't know without talking to the owner first  I might add he started to wiggle and trying to get away from this girl. He doesnt like to be held, even when I hold him he gives me a kiss just so I can get off his case and put him on the floor again lol |
I never let anyone hold my girls either. I guess they just don't think of what could happen if they jump out of their arms. Like you I don't pick up any one's pups either. |
I know how you feel. When my son was younger people came up to him all the time and said"How handsome he was" which was fine. But then when we were out for a familyinner this older man came up pinched my son's cheeks and said How "beautiful" he was. It creeped me the h*** out and my husband had to stop me from flipping my ish. I dont let anyone touch my bulldog either unless I know them well or she goes up to them herself and they are okay with petting her. I'm a germaphobe so I don't really trust stranger's cleanliness habits anyway lol |
I never allow anyone near my dogs...I simply say, He doesnt like strangers and he may bite! That staves them off....I am sorry but I am getting tooo old and tooo fat to be giving a foot chase, while someone takes off with my baby tucked under their arm! |

I have NO problem asking someone to please not pet or pick up my baby. She is always tethered in where ever we are or on a leash and Im on the other end. But still she is very shy and not crazy about strangers, she doesnt act agressive she acts terrified. |
I know what you mean its a problem I have with George too, I think because Yorkies are little and gorgeous people just have to touch. But unless someone is aware of just how much they can wriggle I wont let anyone hold him in case they drop him. He is pretty fast as well and can't stand strangers touching him unless he is in my arms, he darts away behind my legs or will literally try to jump into my arms if its all too much. Even with all the advertising we have here about not patting unknown dogs with out asking the owner it makes no difference they still rush in. |
Keep him close to you and say that he might bite or has an infection that can spread to humans. Should scare them off. |
Ugh, some people have no boundaries. I'm amazed by the number of people who push down on Lola's ears, I know they're huge and adorable but DON'T TOUCH. The list of people allowed to hold Lola is very short, the others have to sit if they want to see her. She likes to be held but she can be very wiggley. I've had dogs my entire life, including another very small yorkie, and I nearly dropped her once. I haven't had strangers try to pick her up, but she's only met strangers at the pet store and vet. I carry her in those places because of germs/fleas/finding stuff to put in her mouth/getting stepped on/other dogs. |
People have no respect anymore. We are living in a very selfish, self-centered world. I don't blame you, that would make me mad too. I guess you just have to get on their level to get it through to some people, NO TOUCHING!!!!!! |
Yorkies are just so cute, people lose their minds! |
is he on a leash when this happens, you might start saying right off the bat, you can pet him, but please don't pick him up he does not like that. I don't think anyone has tried to pick Lola up, but LOL just like she does with me she backs up and runs when someone tries to pick her up. She really does not like to be picked up. |

And it comes down to just giving an automatic precaution. Like if if someone comes to him I'll pick him up to be petted. Or if I see them looking like they want to pick him up (you'll learn this look) I tell them in my most polite voice "Oh, please don't pick him up." and tell them it's because I'm trying not spoil him.(he's super spoiled and i actually don'tcare) so far people respect that. Draco did brake his paw when he was 3 months leaping from my sisters hands, but most people don't respond to this as well as they do when I tell them I don't want him spoiled. And I think if picking him to let other people pet him just kind of automatically let people know that this is as far as their getting with him. |

I agree with the posts above that a cute pup makes people lose their minds, and forget their manners. The only thing I can recommend is strict supervision. When you see the hands going to pick up Bentley, tell them no. Tell them he doesn't like to be picked up. |
HA, I don't have to worry about someone picking any of my guys up ! When going to somewhere like PetSmart, I always put all three of them in a Shopping Basket. I just don't like them walking around where I know that other Dogs have marked and no telling what on their floors. I just don't want my guys carrying anything back to my vehicle/home on their feet like that. Anyway, My Male Sneakers is "somewhat" protective  Actually, he'll snap at someone if they stick their hand close to him or my other two. I rather enjoy seeing the person pull their hand back quickly, and look at me with that surprised look :D :D My usual comment to them is... "That's not a very good idea" It's amazing how presumptuous some people are, and many who experience Sneakers wrath, comment indignantly, expecting all Dogs (I presume) to be friendly little wiggly bodies, that they can do anything they want to/with. I just smile, as I move on, as give Sneakers a nice pat on the head. ;) Understand, this is encouraged/trained behavior for my Males. An extension of their responsibility/duty to not only protect themselves, but my property and person. My Females are a different story (never met a stranger). Problem is, that Sneakers won't let you get close enough to them to find that out. |
