Taping Ears? Hi all. I read these posts everyday, and always get so much good advice from all of you. But I have a question that has been asked here many times and I thought I knew the answer, but a good friend of mine who has had Yorkies for years told me you have to tape up the ears or they wont stnad up staight. I told him that either they would or wouldn't and he argued that if I didn;t my Baxter would have floppy ears. I think he is adorable either way, and being my first yorkie, I dont know if I am right or he is. I trimmed all the hair off the 1st half of ears to help with the weight. Please help me. |
My vet and my breeder suggest not taping ears because you can actually cause major damage to the cartilage. The vet told me that they won't tape ears unless it is in breeds that they actually crop their ears (Dobermans, ect.) If you keep the hair trimmed short on his/her ears, and rub them like you are trying to "mold" them to stand, that helps. You might also want to supplement calcium which you can get from your vet, or just give them around 1 tbsp. of cottage cheese everyday. Parker's ears stood on their own, but his sister which my aunt owns, is still a little droopy, but she has gotten better with her's standing since she started all of this! Hope this helps! :p |
I know taping was the only way my babe's ears stood. (I saw the parents.Her father's ears were floppy) I am doing it again with my new pup. I was very careful never to keep them taped for more than 3 days, then cleaned the ears, shaved the ear and left them alone until they flopped again. Each time she held them longer. By her 4th mo. she was holding them most of the time and by 5th mo. never taped. I know it is a preference and some ears never stand..but I felt like I had to try. I asked many people and my Vet before I started the taping..for it was quite a commitment on both of us. He felt like it was great and showed me how. Said the major worry was not to leave on more than a week and really clean the ears and check them for any signs of smell (infection). He also said to give the ears plenty of "rest" days between taping. Just don't give up..keep taping until you have results or determine the ears will never stand. Many pups take months to pull their ears up..I just didn't want to take the chance and wait too long to start..Again it was a decission I made and may not be what you want to do.. |
I started taping my dogs ears early, then went to the vet. He told me that the cartlidge on her ears really wouldn't be strong enough until right around six months to stand up. So I quit taping them, and just kept the hair shaved off. They went up and down, and up and down the whole time. When she neared the six month mark, and they weren't staying up, I cut out a teardrop shaped piece of cereal box, and placed it on the inside of her ear (not in the canal or anything, just on the upper part of the ear) and then taped that. I left it on for three days, and viollla, they stayed up. She is a bigger yorkie (9lbs) and her ears are pretty big. I really wanted them to stand up, and they finally did. Dont give up if you really want them to stand up. I have read on here that if you don't get them up by 6 months they never will so keep trying. |
