Ready to go home??? I know I have read that puppies should stay with their mothers until they are 12 weeks of age. Is that just a general rule of thumb or a hard and fast rule. A local breeder was recommended to us, but she thinks her puppies are ready to go home at 8 weeks. Is that a red flag, or does it just depend on the size/health of the puppies? If so, please elaborate. I would love to hear any and all opinions. |
As a rule of thumb, breeders should keep the pups till their 12 weeks old. But never buy from a breeder that releases them before 8 weeks. There's so much socializing and interaction skills they learn between the 8-12 week age. Mom is still teaching them lots, too. |
I know that it is definitely recommended for pups to stay with their mothers till they are 12 weeks! I think in some states it is outlawed for breeders to sell them before then! But here it is not outlawed! We got Gidget when she was 8 weeks old and we are getting our new Chloe at nine weeks old. |
I have gotten puppies both at 12 weeks and younger (before I knew that it's not a good idea). I have found the longer they are with litter mates the best. 8 weeks would be my very min to get a pup. I have one that was let go at 7 weeks and she had the worst time with the change. Of course I am happy I got her that young as she was 90% unsocialized and had worms so badly that while sitting on the couch (warning - gross) she had them crawling out of her behind!!! |

I have to admit that with Kip, the breeder wanted her to go home at 8 weeks and I took her without knowing better. She was healthy enough, but as she has aged she is very much a 'people' dog and not very fond of dogs in strange places. She gets along great with our cats, brittany spaniel and horses because they are all a part of her 'family', but take her out anyplace and she doesn't handle it very well. I had her in obedience classes as a pup but had to quit because of back problems. I think that would have helped her too, but being with the mom longer is definitely the best. |
Oh ok I am sorry about that! :( I thought I had read somewhere that it was 12 weeks! That makes me feel a little better about getting my baby! Everywhere I called around here, the breeders let their pups go at 8 wks! Thanks for telling me that! |
