Questions about a 10 week old pup My pup is 10 weeks old. She has been with us for about a month now and is doing great. But I just have some questions about her weight. We took her to the vet because she was eating last week, and she weight 2.6 lbs. then we took her for her 2nd shots this Monday and they said she weighted 3.5lbs. I didnt think their was a way she gained a lb in one week so I weight her at home and she does weight 3.5. Is this normal for a yorkie to weight so much at this age? I googled this and it seems like she is really big for her age. We are feeding her Royal Canin and giving her 2/3 a cup of food a day. Also her hair is a lot longer and fluffier than pictures I see on the Internet of a yorkie that young. I will try to post pictures if her shortly if I can get her to sit still. |
Are you sure she is 10 weeks? What is her birth date? |
Yes. She was born May 9. So she 10 weeks today. That's what it says on her registration papers. |
This doesn't seem right.. You got your pup when she was only 6 weeks? That is way to young! Where did you buy her? |
3.5lbs at 10 weeks means shes going to be bigger than standard size (7 lbs). Mine is 3.8lbs and he's 4 months old. Did you get her when she was 6 weeks? |
All puppies grow at different points in their life. No two pups will gain weight at the exact same pace and they will gain more or less depending on their appetite and there age. I have had pups even younger than yours gain more than a pound in under two weeks time. Its really not that uncommon and nothing to be concerned about. It jut meant that your pup is happy and healthy !! Would you prefer that he rarely eats and is underweight, Probably not . . . |
Anxious to see pics of this baby..... |
Maybe her first weight of 2.6 was a bit off. One of mine weighed 4.2 at 12 weeks...another weighs 3.0 at 23 wks. They all grow at different rates & go through growth spurts at different times. I woudn't limit your pup's food at this age. They eat more when they're puppies than when they're adults. They need those nutrients to grow up strong & healthy. Good luck!! |

There is no correct weight for a puppy that young in my opinion a puppy can not be fat. She may grow to be a little bigger then standard or she may have a growth spurt now and then not grow much more you just ever know with pups. I'm sure you will still love her even if she get a little bigger then standard right? |
She looks adorable & healthy to me :) |

She looks like she will be on the big side. Dud you see the parents? This is why I personally always ask to see the parents just to get an idea of adult size. Even though its not 100%proof. |
I have read the above comments. Is it wrong to get a Puppy at 6 weeks? Mine is 10 weeks and weighs 2.7 as of last week. |
I think that most breeders won't let them go home until they are at least 12 weeks |
Yes after reading this I'm going to ask her why she lets The puppies go so early. This is my first puppy and I should Have done better research. Is there anything I can do now to makeup For the time he missed with the mom. |

Yes we seen the parents. They had both of them there. They didnt seem to big, but I have never seen a Yorkie in person so I can't compare. My wife has been wanting a teacup yorkie for years and I promised her one for a wedding present, but I read the truth about teacups so I talked her out of one. And I know that 6 weeks old is to young to get a pup, but we were told that they were old enough to come home. We didnt realize she was 6 weeks old until we were on way home when we looked at her papers. |

She is registered with CKC, and now reading up on CKC I wish I would have waited. But she was what we could afford and my wife was dying to get her. But we're not going to trade her in if she's not pure now, but I just don't want to pay this much for a mixed breed. Is there a way to test to see if she is pure? The parents looked pure to me. I know that we can pay to get her pedigree through CKC, but will this prove anything. |
Firstly - she's beautiful. You said your puppy is CKC as in - Continental Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club The Canadian Kennel Club is a valid and reputable kennel club, the Continental Kennel Club (in my not so humble opinion) is not, and it's quite easy to get non-purebred dogs registered with the Continental Kennel Club. From looking at your pictures, I do not believe your puppy is 100% Yorkie, she definitely looks like a mix to me. She actually looks almost the spitting image of Gypsy, only much larger. Gypsy is a Yorkshire Terrier Mix (SPCA assessed). Perhaps your mix was a couple generations back, or somewhere else in her line - but I think she's a mix. You can get DNA testing at your veterinarian's office if you're that interested...it's $60.00 here but I'm sure that will vary from vet to vet, and state to state, city to city and so on. The reason I will have it done on Gypsy soon is to see what other breeds she has in her so I can check the known medical issues those particular breeds are known to have problems with...that will help me in the future when I ask for certain tests at her vet. That being said - your puppy is gorgeous. I wouldn't trust the breeder for information, or another puppy at any point in time or for any help in raising her... simply because they let her go at 6 weeks and that is, in my opinion, abominable behavior for any breeder. I say as long as she's healthy, who cares about size. She definitely is not a tiny, but that's just more of her to love. |

She's a cutie, but will probably just be larger than standard. I'm glad that you will love her no matter her breed. |
She is registered - Continental Kennel Club I have learned my lesson with her to stay away from CKC. I never researched kennel clubs before I bought her bc I'm from a small town in Alabama where most people don't register their dogs and I've heard of CKC but I knew AKC was the bigger and better. I have emailed the CKC and they said that I could fill out a complaint package against the breeders. After looking at pictures on the Internet, now to me she reminds me of a Yorkie Poo. I went ahead and ordered a DNA test for her just to find out. So I can at least stop these people from selling to other uninformed people like me. I have had tons of people ask me where I got her and I just can't recommend them to anyone. This doesn't change her place in the house, she still will be spoiled as if she is a Grand Champion. |

I agree with you. Mine is continental kennel club also. And since I've had My puppy I've learned some things about the lady I got him from I'm not happy with. But I'm still keeping my little guy. |
She looks like a Yorkie to me...and looks like she'll be a dark princess when she gets older! (I personally love when their coats stay dark ^_^) Jack will be 5 months on the 25th and almost weighs 6lbs already. He weight 3.2 at 10 weeks when we brought him home. He isn't chunky either, just has really long legs and only a small bit of fluff in his coat. I assume he will be a big boy when he is full grown, which I don't mind one bit. As long as he stays loveable and healthy :) I wouldn't be too concerned, honestly. She looks perfect & so so pretty. If she's happy and healthy, then you're blessed! :) |
