How much to feed a small puppy My Nina is 1 lb and 11 ounces. She is 4 months old and it doesn't look like she will reach at least 3 lbs. I didn't know that she was going to be so tiny. I never wanted to get such a small Yorkie. I had a 5 lbs before and was looking for something similar. Bottom line is that this is what I got and I have to deal with it. My issue is that she doesn't eat we'll and I am not sure what amount of food should she be eating. Because of her size I feed her 4 times a day and usually I feed her 4 teaspoons of wet food. She will not eat dry food at all. She never eats all her food. I was trying to make sense of the feeding guidelines but I am not sue what is the right amount. She always eats half of whatever I give her. |
Let her eat as much as she wants. Feeding 4 times a day is good. If you don't feel she is getting enough, add another meal to her day. Tiny tummies need lots of tiny meals. :) |
Ours are on free feed (they eat whenever they want) because they don't gorge themselves and all of them are at a healthy weight. With yours being so tiny, you definitely have to watch to make sure she doesn't become overweight, because excess weight on any dog is dangerous, but particularly tiny ones like yours, as they have to support that weight. If she's not eating everything you're giving her, but *is* eating - I would think she's getting enough. Have you asked your vet about this? Is she at a healthy weight *for her body type*? 1 lb, 11 ounces is a very tiny pup, but her weight still could be healthy if it is proportionate to the rest of her. With regard to her refusing to eat dry kibble - have you had her teethers checked by a vet to make sure they're healthy and there are no abscesses or retained teeth that are bothering her? I've not heard of a dog refusing any sort of dry food before. We have some picky eaters in this forum, but I don't remember seeing any that didn't eat any dry food at all. Dry food is good for their teeth and gums. |
Free feed her, so she has access to food all day. Maybe some homemade food too (boiled chicken -then make rice from the boiled chicken water or brown lean ground beef and then add water and rice and cook) add cottage cheese to make it more mushy if you like. |
Has she been checked out @ vet, a full panel blood test & BAT (Bile Acid Test). I would get this done to rule out any liver issues/ problems of why she's not eating well. How's her stool? Any head pressing or circling? Maybe she just has a tiny stomach since she's so little. Does she get walkies? I noticed when they don't get much exercise, they don't really have a hearty appetite. Canned food is fine to give (it's better than kibble), you might find that it causes more plaque tho, so I'd brush her teeth everyday. BTW, @ 4 months, she might be teething. I've noticed that they don't really chew on the kibble, so moistening it would be better for them. |
My baby weighed around that at 4 months and now she is 6 1/2 months and just shy of 3 lbs. I also made sure to feed her 4 times a day and also left Vet's Choice Holistic Small Bites out for her. She actually liked it and continues to eat them throughtout the day (Thank you Cinders' mommy). I now feed her 3 times a day. She was also picky and Primal Freeze Dried seemed to interest her appetite. Just smash a small amount of the nugget mixed with warm water and a few pieces of chicken to get her going. It is very important to try anything you can to make them eat. I had to play games with her food (throw the kibbles on the floor and make her chase them) or anything else that came to mind just so I was sure she ate. |
My boy just about 4 lbs eats about 1/4 cup a day free fed, and he is stocky. |
