hi hi im a little new here....i need some help regrading fleas...I saw a fea on my puppy (Zoey) which i have no clue where it came from...i gave her revolution yesterday. I still see the flea though almost 16 hours later...i called her vet and they suggested capstar? my only problem is she is 1.5 pounds and had two vaccines on monday...revolution yesterday and today im supposed to give her capstar to kill anything on her body without the flea biting...should i give it to her even though she small? |
Could you just hunt down that flea and pick it out and smash it! If it is just one...... I have never heard of those flea meds, so I can't help with that question. |
I use K9 advantix II- 10 lbs and under ( and for pups 7 weeks and older). It's a topical, but your vet should have it. It works pretty well for mine so far. I've also used zodiac spray when needed in the past- puppy formula since most of my dogs have been small- 14 lbs and under. That kills eggs for up to 30 days. If you've already used something for fleas, I'd ask the vet before using a different topical, tbh. Call them and ask. :) Otherwise, hunt down that flea and kill it! |
I would be a bit leary too...I would definitely want to talk to the vet directly before administering anything more...that's a whole lot of treatment for her. Have you tried Flea shampoo yet? |
no i havent tried any shampoo (i have to wait till tom to do it bec i applied revolution first so u have to wait 24-48 hours before a bath) i did ask my vet she is the one that said to use capstar which i will pick from he office...however my breeder told me not to use any flee medication on a tiny puppy but my vet told me otherwise...so now i dont know who to believe? |
Give her a bath...make sure you wet her head 1st then put shampoo around her neck, that way the fleas do not go on her head. Bathe her normally & the flea should jump off her if it's still on her. Most of the time, the flea doesn't stay on the pet, after feeding, they jump off & hide in the cracks & crevices. Vacuum, wash all bedding & repeat weekly. oops, I just read your above post... |

i just found a dead flea i guess it tried to bite her(because of revolution) so im not gonna pick that pill its too much medication and ill just bath her at nite because obviously revolution is now in her system... im washing all my bedding now i dont have carpeted floors , i have wood floors...and one carpet that im about to throw out...i feel like i want to through out my mattress to!...anywhere else it could be beside bedding and carpets that i have to clean? |
hunt that dang flea down and squish it!!!!! I did not know that they make capstar for such tiny pups! |
should i let her out and play? shes not in a crate just in my kitchen blocked off |
For future reference, Capstar is a quick pill that eliminates fleas fast, but is only a 1 times use, and does not give protection after the first 24 hrs. Just my opinion, I would not use any flea treatment, pill, topical, or even flea shampoo on a pup that tiny (age??). I would just shampoo as mimimomo described. Make sure to leave the shampoo/soap on for 5 min. then rinse very thoroughly. Some people love Dawn dishwashing detergent to get rid of fleas. Use a fine toothed flea comb to make sure there are not more fleas hiding. Vacuum daily for a while. You will probably get control by just cleaning the pup and home, since there are not very many fleas. A large infestation over longer time would take more intervention. |

Having them wet and soapy will make it much easier to spot any fleas, and remove with the fine comb. Sometimes I thought my pups only had one or two fleas, but when wet and soapy, I'd find lots more, usually around their tail, belly, and ears. Don't freak out... we've all had them on our pups at one time or another. Luckily I haven't had any on mine for a few years, especially after getting rid of all carpet in my house. Have you posted pics of your little one? She must be a little doll. |

Lnzy i want to wash everything! and throw out wat i can! lol |
i just posted the one pic in my album |
When you wash your litle girl, wet the head first. They will look to hide in the ears, so it's best to be careful. Good luck with your sweet baby girl. |

What is she mixed with, Maltese? She sure is a beautiful little fluff. I can see how fleas could hide in all that fur. |
Great advice above. I saw a flea for the first time in my life last year. My boys picked up a few at the park. We were not using any preventatives at the time, despite our vet's warning that it was a really bad year for fleas. With hard work, we prevented getting infested. We used regular dog shampoo and were generous with it lathering up the boys. Good tip to wet the head first and make a shampoo ring around the neck. Vacuum every nook and cranny every day. That included the car for us because we drive daily to go walking. Fleas lay eggs quickly and new ones hatch in cycles. That is why it is important to keep vacuuming and washing even when you don't see any. Wash beds/bedding and everything that can be washed as often as possible. Every evening when we would return from the park, I would comb out my boys and hunt for fleas. I found one on each dog every night for about 2 weeks. To kill the fleas, I kept coconut oil within reach. Fleas are too hard to catch and the oil slows them down. We haven't seen any this year. Crossing paws and fingers that we won't. Good luck! |
Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with fleas with Katie. When I had three other little ones, I occasionally but had to deal with them. I don't remember much, but I knew that they'd hide in the ears, so I would wet them and the face first and apply shampoo there first. I used a drying powder on the ears afterwards. I rarely had to deal with them, but I always used a preventative. One of my little girls was allergic to fleas, so I had to use two different preventatives two weeks apart. One killed them instantly but wasn't effective on ticks. Fortunately, now I can use something more effective for both fleas and ticks. I never had to deal with getting fleas out of the house luckily. |
Thanks guys! i just dont know where she got them from im trying to remember everything. She has had contact with my cousins and he goes to dog parks and plays with other dogs as well so it could be that as she didnt even get her rabies shot yet so she hasnt been walked yet...how can i tell for sure if they are in the house? |

Honestly, don't worry! (you should have seen me when the kids brought home a note from school that someone had lice...my poor kids I swear they are probably scarred for life from that episode) |
I use Revolution on Trinket and she has never had fleas, so far. I have been reading Roger Biduk`s website. He has me worried. Says they should not have pesticides on them, or give by mouth. (flea and tick preventative.) What are your ideas on that? |
