Need help... Hi I have a 2 1/2 yorkie she weights 3.1 lbs. she is not fixed and I only remember her getting her monthly once. That happened about a year ago. The vet says that he beleives she does I just don't notice. I think she is wrong. I always carry her and it would be hard not to see anything. We have another dog an AHT I would think she would also be snooping around if she smells something. Well I met someone who has a boy that is not even 3lbs which would be perfect for her to breed with. What should I do? |
You need to get your female fixed it could kill her to breed because she is so small no female under 5 pounds should ever ever be bred. If you love her and want what is best for her that is to have her spayed. |
Roxy never went into heat before I spayed her. I kept waiting but it never came. Her has always been between 3.5-4 pounds which is too small to safely breed. I knew I was never going to breed her and would strongly recommended against breeding your girl. Just because 2 dogs can breed does not mean they should be. |

Mines at 6lbs and I still wont breed her! You need to look up the health risks that envolve breeding as well as all of the expenses. The most important part is you risk losing your yorkie. I reccomend getting her fixed as well. |
Too many risks involved with breeding a tiny dog, just because she is tiny and the male is tiny does not mean there is not a genetic chance of having larger pups which could kill her and the pups. Breed standard is under 7 lbs which means probably somewhere in her or his ancestors there are dogs bigger than her and she probably carries a genetic code for larger pups. Why risk it. Not to mention all the other issues. |
Oh my I have a 3lb little girl and I cannot imagine why in the world you would even think about breeding one that size. Take a good look at that tiny pelvis area and you will see that it is a huge risk. Please if you love this baby have her fixed before an accident happens. |
Hello and welcome to yt. I am glad you have come here for advice. it is wonderful that you care so much for your girl to be concerned about breeding. I agree with everyone above please do not breed your girl. It takes a lot to breed a multi tested girl and a tested stud of standard size. A girl her size has even more complications added to her. I suggest that she would be fixed. I would not want to risk my pups life for a chance to have puppies. |
I agree as well, Megan was 3.4lbs fully grown, and even if she hadn't had heart and nee problems, there's no way I would have bred her. As many others have stated anything under 5lbs, should not be bred. I love Mika's thought on this and agree wholeheartedly "Just because two dogs can breed does not mean they should be." Cheers Quad |
Hi I spoke to my Vet about breeding and this is what he she said...As long as you have an estimated day as to when she became pregnant we would then follow the pregnancy with ultrasound and when the due date is near he would induce and have her go into labor at the office. I have known the vet for over 20 years. I am not in this if you all this for the money I want a baby from my baby. I will do more research. Thanks for all your concerns. |

I was in the same place wanting little Finni's and Gwenni's but I realized how selfish it was of me when there are so many dogs needing rescued etc... please really, really think about whether you'd be doing this for the right reason. |

Please please PLEASE do not breed from your tiny girl - it COULD kill her :( If you want another small Yorkie then go to a breeder who has smaller stock.....there are loads of really helpful folk here on Yorkie Talk who will guide you in the right direction :) Personally I would take what your vet says with a pinch of salt.....they are experts in medical issues but when it comes to breeding know-how you need to speak to folk who have had yorkies for many years :) And how much is ultrasounds and an induced labour going to cost? Quite apart from the ethical and moral issues of inducing labour which, surely, goes against nature? :( You could probably get a very nice healthy puppy from a breeder for what vet fees may cost AND at no risk to your beautiful wee girl :) |
