tips for brushing teeth? howdy, any tips on maintaining dental health on our lil uns? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I like to use C.E.T. toothpaste, it's a favorite among many people here. Find the smallest toothbrush possible. Work on brushing at least once a day, twice if you are really enterprising. Don't worry if your pup isn't too agreeable at first. Keep working and training and things will improve. Some people use a towel to wrap their pup in, but it might be better just to work on training your pup to accept brushing teeth. You can supplement brushing with wrapping a little gauze around your finger and rubbing in circles especially along the gumline. This helps with pups with small mouths where back teeth are difficult to reach. A few people have trained their pups to accept the Sonicare electric toothbrush. Wish my boys would let me use it. |

Welcome to YT! There's a few threads that talk about teeth brushing, and maybe a possible video where the dog is brushing his own teeth- :) Marcarter is the pups owner, she really needs to come to my area and help me with that. :) The section called Health and Diet has threads about teeth. I use the C.E.T. poultry flavored brand toothpaste for my pups. Neither one of them will let me put a toothbrush (even a small one) in their mouths. Instead, I put the paste on my finger and rub along the teeth and gum lines. Not as good a using a brush, but at least it is better than doing nothing. Good luck to you and welcome to YT. |
1 Attachment(s) I use DDS Dental wipes and then I brush with coconut oil. Mandie wouldn't tolerate the smallest toothbrush I could find until kjc (a member here on the forum) suggested the Wisp. Attachment 389125 Just take the tip of a knife and pop out the bead in the middle (be sure to get that out). Then I dip it in the coconut oil and brush. Mandie loves coconut oil and this brush is so small..it is perfect. :) |
Toothpaste Hi, my Rocky will not let me brush his teeth but he will lick CET toothpaste, either poultry or vanilla from my finger after I do his eye drops. He thinks it's a treat - sometimes he'll let me rub it around but he is so old, I am just happy that he is willing to lick it - will not get his teeth cleaned again at his age. |

I have to take Lilly in to be groomed about every two or three months. They brush her teeth there. Otherwise, she just gets bones and greenies and those kinds of things at home to help clean the teeth. |

Go slow with your pup, first let him/her taste the toothpaste on your finger to get him/her use to it. Then try letting him/her lick it off of the toothbrush, after he/she is used to the toothpaste and brush you can start the actually brushing. The key is patience and persistence, that's how I'm able to brush Henri's teeth and he actually likes it!:) I hope this helps! |
Oh yeah, I only bought a greenie once. It was devoured. Everything generally is. She's a big chewer. |
