Is it normal for a pup to have really yellow pee My Cookie seems to drink pretty well and eats a lot, but her pee seems to come out very yellow. My doctor always tells me it's best for me if my pee is clear, but as far as I can remember the only time I saw Minnie have clear pee was at the end of her life when we were overloading her with fluids to help compensate for her deeply damaged kidneys. But should very yellow urine worry me with my 15 week old pup? |
Sometimes when the pee is clear that indicates that the kidneys aren't working correctly. They aren't doing their job in filtering out waste. Does your pup drink enough water? Sounds like her urine is concentrated and she needs more fluids. But you really should take it up with your vet. |
All 3 of mine have varying shades of yellow pee. I guess is depends on their water intake. I would make sure Cookie is drinking enough water. If your worried maybe a urinalysis wouldn't be a bad idea. When I had a yorkie pup with congenital kidney failure, her pee had no odor or color. That's how I found out she had it. |
yorkiefan, I am glad you asked this question as I have the same concern with one of my pups who is 4 yrs. old. It seems her urine is very yellow compared to the other 3 pups. I will be watching this thread and hope to see some input. Karlee is almost due for an annual checkup, so I will discuss it with the vet soon, but don't feel it is an emergency. |
We keep two water bowls out for her, one in the kitchen, one on the door of her crate, and she seems to drink pretty well from them. I also take an outdoor bowl of water any time we're outside for more than a potty break. |

I think she was just a little dehydrated yesterday, as she took some good big drinks last night before bed and then her pee was a normal yellow today. |

Customarily, the color density relates to how much nutrients are/are not being absorbed. This (I'm told) can work two ways... Very Clear, everything is being absorbed... Could mean that more could/should be ingested. A deficiency. Very Yellow, an abundance in system, and being discharged... An extremely healthy diet, or not being absorbed for some reason. Either extreme should cause notice. |

I agree with SW Houston. Either extreme is not desirable, although not always cause for concern unless it happens consistently. Pee can be clear after drinking too much water (like Max used to in the bath). Pee can be darker first thing in the morning after being held in the bladder longer. Or pee can be brighter yellow when unnecessary nutrients are passed. Try eating a bunch of cereal or protein bars and the same thing happens. :p |
Personally the better I eat the clearer my pee. So my dogs pee is more on the pale side too. It could be the ingredients in the food |
