Is Prozac Ok to give to Morkies Hi there all. My 10 month old Morkie has been working with a trainer for 2 months working on behavior issues. The trainer who is wonderful, says she really can't do much more to help her. She has major fear and anxiety around children, men, loud noises and what ever is not familiar on her walks and car rides. She barks excessively and lunges and nips the legs of strangers. It has become exhausting as well as disruptive to my whole family. I feel so bad for her as well. My vet prescribed Prozac for her. Was wondering if anyone has had experience with this drug and what u think. So confused. Never giving up or giving her away. Want to make this work. Help! |

Thanks for the encouragement. |
dog I would definitely do some research before I gave my Yorkies this drug. Call a pharmacist or another vet just to make sure of the dose and if it is ok. I have a hard time trusting just one person when it comes to dangerous drugs. |
Absolutely fine. One of my dogs take it for anxiety (car fear, chewing excessively, nervousness and aggression toward strangers). Does not help with aggression, but does with everything else. The goal is to use it as a training aid and wean off someday. |
My Pixie who is 7 1/2 years old developed a severe anxiety to loud noises. I tried several things and nothing helped. Her vet put her on Clomicalm. I talked to 3 of the vets at my animal hospital before giving it to her. I also had blood work, urinalysis and an xray to rule out other causes. Pixie has been on it for about 8 days and she is showing slight improvements. I will keep you posted on how its working. Good luck with your baby. |
Callie my yorkie got anxiety after breaking her tooth in her crate and we tried everything and she would not sleep at night in my room and nothing worked so i took her to my vet and explained the problem and she checked her over very well and suggested a medicine that was a generic of prozac but had a different name and we had Callie on it for a few months and it worked and then eventually we weened her off and she is doing amazing!!! |

How is she on a walk if you pick her up and carry her for a bit? Or if you just stand and hold her? |

My trainer advised not walking her on the street because she lunges at passing cars and of course barks at every little noise or movements. I have tried to pick her up and hold her when a car comes but she tries so hard to squirm out of my arms. I even live on a dead end street but with lots of kids. Not enjoyable to walk her. I have a large fenced in yard so I am able to exercise her back there. |
I will let you know how it goes. Thanks! |
I agree that it's not used as a cure all. My trainer will continue to work with her with the hope that it will help her past the things that she fears and accept situations better. Then she will be weaned off the drug slowly if progress is made. Thanks |
