Blood in new puppy's stool hi everyone ! I just got Bella yesterday. she's 9 weeks old. Yesterday she had normal looking stool but today she has diarrhea with mucus and blood in it. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue with their puppy and can tell me what it might be. She has a vet appointment tomorrow morning. Thank so much! |

welcome, about the blood in poo, that does not sound right at all. I would get him to the vet asap. |
Vet asap! |
Defiantly take a stool sample with you to the vet. that is typically what they ask for. They can tell a lot from it that will help diagnose what may be the cause. Just put some into a paper towel than into a zip lock baggie and keep in fridge until you leave. I tend to forget it so you may want to put it (poo sample) with her leash and harness so that you don't forget it. Have you changed her food or has she eaten something she shouldn't ? |
Vet ASAP!!! |
Stress causes pups to break with coccidiosis....it is not uncommon for young pups to do this with all the stress they deal with when transitioning to their new home, new family members, no momma or siblings....this is all very new and confusing and frightening to these new babies. If you can be seen today before the vet closes for the day, it would be nice....the sooner you can get the medicine started, the better. Watch her closely to make sure it doesnt get to be a dangerous amount of bleeding in the stool, which will require a trip to the ER overnight, as these babies can go downhill rapidly....otherwise, her vet appointment tomorrow morning....WAIT!! that is SUNDAY!!! Is your vet open on Sunday? |
I agree take your little one to the vet and also take a stool sample with you. |
My Gina will be 9 weeks on Sunday, half of her litter has this problem, including Gina herself. She had a very bad day yesterday, but today her poo is forming again, still soft, but no blood or mucus. We are keeping a close eye on her, monitoring for hypoglycemia and dehydration, and have taken her off of the food we got from the breeder, Pedigree Puppy. We are feeding her rice cooked with chicken broth, and I'm going to get some Nutri-Cal/Paste, to supplement, and making sure she gets enough water. Watch her for signs of shock, check her gums, should be healthy red, check her eyes, should be clear, monitor for hypoglycemia and dehydration. Make sure to take her stool sample to the Vet, and keep the appointment. Cheers Quad:animal36 |

I really didn't have much of choice in the mater, When I got my 1st one, Megan we waited till she was 12 weeks, insisted even. With Gina we weren't given much of a choice in the matter. We could have paid $25 a week for an extra two weeks, but I guess I'm a little selfish, my Megan died on May 28th, and my youngest son graduated Army boot camp, I'm a disabled Veteran myself, my puppy is my anti-depressant, 1 less med to take, but this shouldn't really be discussed in this thread.
