Tired after a night at the emergency vet I came home last night from work and Marco was very excited from being in his play area all day.... Went into the bathroom and Marco nudged his head in the door, took a pair of underwear and went running with excitement. I went to go grab them out of his mouth and they were gone. How does a 7lb dog think it's okay to swallow a pair of underwear whole! This was at 1 am. I started freaking out, called the closest emergency vet (an hour away) and they said I need to bring him down. After 20 minutes of waiting for him to throw up, and nothing happening, I grabbed my purse and took him down. They induced vomiting and he threw them up whole, plus his 2 inch long bully stick that he swallowed right before the underwear. I also, tried to grab it from him because it was getting too small and he swallowed it. I feel like in his puppy mind he was thinking (no if I can't have it, you won't either) He doesn't chew up his food much either which has Ben a concern. I gave him heart guard on the first and he swallowed that.... Which isn't too small of a "treat"...... This is a warning sign to me that I need to start keeping things away from him better... And start really working on training him because he definitely is hyperactive and has his own stubbornness about him naturally. I think I have a challenge ahead of me... Also, I think doggy daycare is in our nearfuture. He just is so high energy. |
Marco sounds like a rascal! I'm glad he is okay. This must have been very scary for you. Bully sticks -- there is one member here whose dog swallowed a 6" stick! My older boy likes to swallow things, so I hold his chews for him. We have to keep everything out of the doggies' reach at my house. Best wishes to Marco and you. Hope you can catch up on your sleep today. |
For Heartguard, I cut the dose into 3 -4 pieces and put it on a plate so that the boys won't swallow it whole. |

Thank God you were able to avoid surgery! I'd start with teaching him 'Leave it', and 'Drop it', and work at getting him to trade items for a treat. |
OH my!! Your story made me giggle. He's being such a onery baby! You're going to have your hands full with him! Try to puppy proof your home as much as possible since you know he's going to get into EVERYTHING!! I wish you luck in keeping him out of trouble! Somehow, I think he's going to find something to get into just to keep you on your toes...LOL! |

I couldn't believe that that small a dog ate a whole pair of undies!!! Who would have thought a dog would keep swallowing something that big and unappetizing! I'm so glad you took him right in and got it out and didn't come on here and post a question first about should you take him to the Vet ER!!! Thanks for being a good mommie and getting him help ASAP and I'm so glad this little one is going to be fine. You really do have to watch these babies like a hawk but I would never have believed this if I hadn't read it! It would be funny if it weren't so serious an issue. |

I don't want him to keep going through with this and I also can't afford these trips to the ER everytime he gets something in his mouth. |
 a pair of panties whole . . . . I agree. He needs to be taught drop it and leave it. |

There are special slow-feed bowls you can get that force dogs to eat more slowly. And definitely teach him basic obedience and "Leave it!". You both will enjoy the training process and by the way, it goes on daily just about from now on. Dogs usually just love it. Keeps them out of a world of misbehavior when done with loving patience and pride in the dog's accomplishments and not about discipline. But just set boundaries and don't allow him to go past those without your intervening and standing him down if you must, though once he's trained, that so rarely happens you barely remember how to do it. An obedience, lovingly trained dog rarely acts out. |

I have to laugh (I know its not funny really) but my dd is living with us for a couple of years to finish her bsn... well her dog steals her undies a lot! He has not eaten them but I am sure the day is combing that he will try. Anyway My point... her undites are two little stings tied together... easily to see how they could be swallowed.:eek: Now... mine would be a totaly different story:rolleyes::rolleyes::( |

It is the underlying authority in your voice. This stems from your absolute certainty that you have the right to tell them what to do, and quite simply there is no choice but to obey you:) So work on your own inner beliefs, to help fuel your commands. |
