Female Yorkie in Heat
 
first time owner of a yorkie...female....in heat....GO!!! LOL... seriously... I love her to bits and we've only had her a week. How lovely that she was in heat when we got her and didn't know. I want to make sure that I'm doing all that I can for her. She sees the vet tomorrow but i'm still anxious to know if there is anything that i should be doing for her other than the ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE washable diapers that i got her.....sooooooo stinkin' cute!

p.s....how long will this heat cycle last?

GO? I don't get it...is she going to be spayed? Please be very careful if she potties outdoors, any males in the vicinity can & will get to her & diapers will not prevent her from getting pregnant.

1) Why GO... what does that mean please?

2) Why is it LOVELY that she's in heat....what do you intend to DO with this knowledge??? :confused:

3) What are you going to ask the vet to do.....:confused:

4) All of us on YT are SO ABSOLUTELY, DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY THAT YOU LOVE washable diapers, and are happy with how 'cute' they are.....my goodness, that makes everything ok then....Aaaaaaargh!

omg....how rude... You completely took my words negatively. My "how lovely" comment was showing sarcasm and disapproval to the previous owner. Yes, i think the diaper looks cute. Is that a crime!?!? I'm almost turned off from this site now which sucks because i was so excited to learn from you all. I'm going to the vet tomorrow fir a check up because we just got her and I'm a concerned and responsible pet owner... my "go" comment was to signal the green light for everyone to give all of their helpful hints. Out of everything that i typed you somehow found nothing but negativity. Disappointed.

Lots of things to safeguard her. If you have un-neutered males in the house, it is crate and rotate.

Never let her off lead, unless in a very secure environment.

Make sure you keep her rear end clean.

I would not walk out in the general public any female that is in heat.

Thanks so much for your input! she has a harness so that we can keep a good hold on her without "yanking" her so to speak. I didn't know about the keep her rear end clean part. She cleans herself so I thought that was enough...thanks...i didn't know. She's not pad trained in the house and we've finally got her to only go outdoors. How should I go about stopping her from going outside? Any tips would be great! thanks again!:thumbup:

You need to make sure she is not around unfixed males. When she goes outside you need to be with her the whole time. If you feel before you got her that she was around an unfixed male I would do an emergency spay.

Thanks! I'll mention it to the vet. question: If she's been with an unuetered male. would she still continue with her heat cycle or would it be shortened? thanks for your input!

If you have a fenced in yard a high fence, that should be good. I even with 6.5 foot fences walked out with my gal into the backyard for her pees n poos.

If no fenced in yard, well always on lead, and \I would not stray too far from home.

With a halter it is great you could yank her up and away, how-ever a full male would not leave the two of you alone. Any full male of any size will want to mate her, and if she is up in your arms, that might stop a few males but not the majority. That means the male will leap up onto you to get to your female. A six pound male not such a problem, but what if it is a 80 to 100 lb dog? You will go down for sure.

hmmmm, you pose a very good point....I'll be sure to let me daughter know this as she walks her most of the time. (i stopped typing to tell my daughter. She said two fenced in pitbulls were trying to jump the gate to get to her. but their gate is about 8 feet high so thank God for that. Thanks a lot for your information. you've been very helpful and very nice! :D

Please be careful it would be an awful thing if a pitbull got to her it would hurt her

Dogs also dig...
There were several sad unfortunate circumstances when the different owners left their Yorkies in heat unattended in their fenced in yard & they got pregnant.

The heat cycle lasts 2 to 3 weeks, but I'm sure your vet will have more information. If she was in heat when you got her, is there any possibility that she has already mated? If so, I would definitely get her spayed as soon as the vet says it is safe, since a pregnancy by a larger breed male dog could be fatal. In the meantime, be sure to be with her and watch her like a hawk every time you take her outside to potty to keep her safe from un-neutered males, who will do anything they can to get at her.
