Earth Dog In August of 2012 the AKC made Yorkshire Terriers eligible to participate in earthdog events. I was wondering how its going. I have been trying to find events where I live but I haven't seen any advertised. I would love to hear some stories of Yorkie Earth dog participants. |
Here's a lnk to Florida dog shows and competitions: InfoDog List of Pure Bred Dog Shows Held in FL I know from your previous posts you're also looking for a mentor. Going to shows and getting to know the people who show is REALLY the best way to accomplish that. |
Thanks normarae63 for the link. I agree with you meeting people who are currently showing yorkies in person is a way better way to meet a good mentor then posting on the internet. I went to two all breed shows this spring, one in Brooksville and one at the florida county fair grounds. It was awesome I really enjoyed it. . So many beautiful, happy dogs it really was fun. I really wanted to go to the CFYTC show in Orlando but my wife got sick that weekend and I needed to be with her. I work in the sports world and typically in my world talking to coaches and players before a game or immediately after isn't the best idea. So I just observed and enjoyed the experience but wasn't able to network with people as much. Its ironic, my job requires me to be very animated and social, but my default setting is to be the quiet guy in the corner. I can do it for work but that's about it. I bet a lot of you can relate to that. Thanks again normarae63. |
I know I could search (and I may later) but at work right now..was wondering what Earth Dog is exactly? :) |
Here you go Mandiesmom From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia An earthdog trial tests the working ability and instinct of the small, often short-legged terriers or Dachshunds. These dogs were bred to hunt vermin and other quarry which lived in underground dens. Earthdog den trials involve man-made underground tunnels that the dogs must negotiate, while scenting a rat, "the quarry." The dog must follow the scent to the quarry and then "work" the quarry. Depending on the sanctioning organization, “working” means barking, scratching, staring, pawing, digging; any active behavior. The quarry is protected at all times by wooden bars across the end of the tunnel. The hunting encounter is controlled, and neither the dog nor the quarry (usually two rats) are endangered by the activity. |

And I can not for the life of me figure out what took them so long!!!!! Yorkies are NATURALS at this!!! |
I think it's really great because the rules allow spayed & neutered dogs a wonderful way to "show off" their talents. I'd love to get Tuffy involved eventually. Right now, I think he needs a refresher course in basic obedience! (See my thread about mushrooms) OP, if you do get a chance to check this out, PLEASE take lots of pictures! We love seeing all the great activities other YTers get involved in. :D |
